Get a 2p per Avios discount on British Airways cash flights from Gatwick

If you are opted in to British Airways Executive Club marketing emails, you may have received an interesting offer today.

If you book a BA short haul Gatwick flight for cash by 23:59 on Monday, you can ‘part pay with Avios’ and receive 2p per Avios in value.

Full details are on ba.com here.

Part pay with Avios offer

The offer is fairly flexible, and is valid on economy (Euro Traveller) and business (Club Europe) flights from London Gatwick.

That said, the terms and conditions for the offer suggest it is only “valid on selected travel dates between 20 October 2022 – 30 April 2023.” We assume this means school holidays, although it seems to work for February Half Term so perhaps not?

You need to have at least 250 Avios in your account to be eligible.

Can you pay for your entire flight with Avios?

No.

Unlike Virgin Atlantic, which lets you ‘part pay with points’ up to the entire value of your booking, British Airways only lets you pay the base fare, excluding all taxes and charges.

There are further limits as part of this deal.

For return flights, the only discounts available are (per person)

  • £10 off for 500 Avios
  • £18 off for 900 Avios
  • £32 off for 1,600 Avios
  • £56 off for 2,800 Avios
  • £80 off for 4,000 Avios
  • £100 off for 5,000 Avios

For one-way flights, these numbers are halved:

  • £5 off for 250 Avios
  • £9 off for 450 Avios
  • £16 off for 800 Avios
  • £28 off for 1,400 Avios
  • £40 off for 2,000 Avios
  • £50 off for 2,500 Avios

Each option gives you 2p per Avios, which is exceptionally generous. If you are making a BA booking from Gatwick this weekend, you’d be crazy not to take advantage of this offer up to the maximum number of Avios allowed.

How to get 2p per Avios on British Airways flights

In order to make use of the offer, you need to book a ‘standard’ cash ticket, flying from Gatwick. Once you’ve selected your flight and class, you’ll be presented with various options to use Avios to save on the cash element of the ticket:

All you need to do is select the option you want to use. As you are getting a flat 2p per Avios with all the options, there is no benefit to choose one over the other – just how much you want to save (and how many Avios you have to spend!)

Conclusion

If you had been planning to book any British Airways Gatwick flights, this offer is a great opportunity to redeem some Avios for a discount at an exceptionally good rate.

The offer ends at 23:59 on Monday evening, so you only have a few days to make the most of it.

  • Sam says:

After taking half term next week off very late, was looking for a random quick trip with my 11 year old just to get away (anywhere within 4 hours!) few days. Have Ryanair to Faro in mind *but* this is the perfect time ask if anyone has seen anything with BA from LGW next week!

  • The other Kevin says:

If you cancel a ‘part pay with avios’ I assume you don’t get your cash back but do you get the Avios back?

    • Rob says:

You can’t cancel – these are cash tickets.

    • John says:

Depends on the cancellation rules of the ticket. You should at least get the genuine taxes back (which weren’t paid with avios) minus a fee which could be more than the refund,

      • Rob says:

Genuine taxes will be quite low – unlikely to breach the £35 cancellation fee unless you’re in Business.

      • The other Kevin says:

That’s what I mean. We book far in advance and cancel quite a lot, so generally avoid cash tickets because you nearly always lose everything, but if you got the 5000 Avios back, that would be something.

        • Rob says:

You don’t. Even if BA cancels your flight, you won’t get the Avios back – you get the £100 instead.

  • David says:

Is this the third “2p per Avios” promotion that’s been run over the past year and a bit? And is it going to be a regular thing? I was just thinking whether the Nectar tie up had something to do with it, since I think this kind of promotion has only been run since then (before it was the “half the Avios for redemption” kind). I then open up my Nectar offers and see this offer being promoted there.

    • Rob says:

I see it as a way for BA to quietly discount without having to offer deals to those willing to pay full.

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Given you can but Avios for 1.75p I think it’s fair to say that’s exactly what it is…

  • Waddle says:

Could I book a return flight using this offer and then tack on a hotel after the fact for 5 nights and turn it into a BA Holidays booking for double tier points? Or does the BA Holidays double TP offer only work if you book everything from the get go?

  • Steve in Croydon says:

I think I’ll just stick to standard Avios tickets out of LGW/LCY with the flexibility of cancellation and refund.

  • HoneymoomFlyer says:

Vaguely on topic: is Gatwick South with BA in economy and without status as dreadful as North is with EasyJet? I was shocked how crowded North was last month and I’m trying to work out how much more I’m willing to pay with BA to avoid it.

    • johnny_c-l says:

I wouldn’t expect much difference when it’s busy, although personally I prefer the layout and seating in South.

  • swifty says:

just booked malta for £50 rtn, which I have been looking to book for £133 with air malta. I can cope with economy for 3hours –Cheers Rob!
