How to access Lufthansa’s Heathrow lounges with the American Express Platinum card

The Platinum Card from American Express comes with a lot of airport lounge access benefits:

• You get two Priority Pass cards, each of which allows two people unlimited access to 1,300 airport lounges globally (so a family of four is covered)

• You get access to all Plaza Premium lounges with a guest, even those not in Priority Pass, by showing your Platinum card

• You get access to Delta lounges, when flying with Delta, by showing your Platinum card (no guests allowed)

• You and your guests get access to American Express’s own network of Centurion airport lounges, including the one in Heathrow Terminal 3 which we covered here

• You can access 13 other American Express-brand airport lounges including Stockholm, Delhi, Mumbai, Mexico City x 3, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Monterrey x 2 (Mexico), Melbourne, Sydney and Toluca (pandemic changes not withstanding)

You also get Eurostar lounge access (no guests) by showing your Platinum card.

You can also access select Lufthansa lounges with The Platinum Card

A lesser known benefit is the relatively recent deal that American Express has with Lufthansa. This offer was trialled in various forms over a number of years, but the current – and I believe final – version is impressive.

You can access a large proportion of, but not all, Lufthansa lounges globally by showing an American Express Platinum card. You must be flying on Lufthansa, SWISS or Austrian Airlines.

For the purposes of this article I just want to focus on the situation at Heathrow Terminal 2, as this is of most benefit to our readers.

How does the Amex Platinum / Lufthansa lounge offer work?

For American Express Platinum cardholders (Centurion cardholders have a different deal):

• anyone with a flight ticket in Economy on Lufthansa, SWISS or Austrian can access the Lufthansa Business Lounge in Heathrow Terminal 2

• anyone with a flight ticket in Business on Lufthansa, SWISS or Austrian can access the Luftansa Senator Lounge in Heathrow Terminal 2

The Senator Lounge is basically a ‘back room’ in the main Business Lounge – it isn’t a separate facility, although it does have a door which requires a code to access.

Guests are an issue

You cannot bring a guest.

Your partner can come with you, of course, if they have a free supplementary Platinum card on your account.

There is no way to get children into the lounge with you under this offer.

Obviously if you and your children are flying in Business Class then they would be allowed into the Business Lounge, but you couldn’t get them into the Senator Lounge.

HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard gets you get a free LoungeKey card, allowing you access to the LoungeKey network.  Guests are charged at £20 although it may be cheaper to pay £60 for a supplementary credit card for your partner.
