News in brief:

Does British Airways want you transferring your Avios to Nectar?

As we have covered, the transfer rate from Avios to Nectar points was cut this week.

It used to be that 250 Avios got you 400 Nectar points worth £2 (so 0.8p per Avios). Now, 300 Avios gets you 400 Nectar points worth £2 (so 0.67p per Avios).

It always seemed likely that this was done to stem the flow of cash out of Avios into Sainsburys, which owns Nectar.

If you doubted this, I suggest you look at the begging message that you now get when doing a transfer – to proceed, you need to click the line in small print.

What the message fails to say is that using Avios for ‘seats, baggage, hotels and car rental’ will still – even after the devaluation – get you a lower pence per Avios than the Nectar transfer.

Get a 100% bonus when you buy IHG One Rewards points

IHG One Rewards has launched a new and time-limited 100% ‘buy points’ bonus, which is as generous as you ever see.

This offer runs to 29th December.

The maximum number of points you can buy is 500,000 (ie 250,000 plus the 250,000 bonus).  The minimum purchase to trigger the bonus is a surprisingly high 30,000 points.

The page to buy points is here.

With a 100% bonus, you would be able to buy up to 500,000 IHG One Rewards points for (at current exchange rates for $2,500) £2,100

I usually value IHG One Rewards points at 0.4p.  You are paying exactly 0.42p at the top end so it not necessarily a slam dunk unless you are just topping up your account. The skill is to use them at hotels where you can get substantially more than 0.4p per point of value, although this got a little harder since IHG moved towards revenue-based redemption pricing.

You can buy points via this link. You have until 29th December to jump in.
