Since October, an increasing number of HfP readers have reported that they are being blocked from referring people under the American Express ‘refer a friend’ programme.

In their American Express account, they see the message “Your Account is temporarily unable to access the referral programme”. Why is this happening?

The bottom line is that no-one knows.

Amex’s T&C restrict the referral programme from anyone whose Amex account is in default but this does not cover the majority of people who are having issues. The only relevant clause in the referral programme terms and conditions is:

Your Card Account’s eligibility to participate in the Referral Programme is based on your overall credit rating and other factors including your Account history with American Express.

Based on this thread in our forum, it seems that – if you call Amex – the staff can see a message about you on their screen but no-one has yet been told exactly what it says. No-one appears to have had the referral ban lifted.

Looking at the reports in our forum (and with the best will in the world, some people are unlikely to publicly admit abuse of the referral programme), it does not seem to be directly linked to:

  • the number of people referred
  • the ‘type’ of people referred (eg whether they are or are not obviously ‘friends and family’, which is a condition of referring people, presumably roughly verified by surname and / or geographic location)

Readers have quoted the following feedback from American Express when questioned:

“We base the eligibility for our referral programme on various factors relating to individual Card Members and their account history. This includes numerous factors affecting the Card Member profile, but we continue to monitor this over time.We automatically check the eligibility of their account at the time of login, as and when their circumstances change. You can start using your card and once circumstances change, you will again get the option to refer”

and

“Your Card Account’s eligibility to participate in the Referral Programme is based on your overall credit rating and other factors including your Account history with American Express. You can start using your card, and once account will be in good standing, our team will automatically review, the option will be available to refer”

and

“I have done a deep check, and I am sorry to know that your refer eligibility is not available as of now. Eligibility is based on these and other factors: account history, bankruptcy, credit rating, lending behaviour, missed payments, participation in internal payment holiday programmes”

My best guess (and it’s only a guess, since Amex is not going to tell us if they are not willing to tell the people involved) is that it is based on the QUALITY of people you refer.

It is very likely that Amex tracks back the profitability of accounts to their original source. This allows them to focus their marketing efforts on places that bring them customers who are valuable over the long term, as opposed to those that deliver lots of sign-ups but who subsequently fail to renew.

It is possible – and this is only a guess – that if you have referred people who have subsequently closed their cards shortly after receiving a sign-up bonus, Amex may have decided that letting you continue to refer people is not a great idea.

I am only surmising, however. I would suspect that your own personal profitability to Amex is also a factor, since it would be sensible to give some leeway to their best customers.

The bottom line is that if you want to retain the ability to refer people to American Express cards, I would recommend that you are careful about who you refer and how they use the card once they have it.

    Yeah – I’m blocked too although not overly bothered as I have no burning desire to refer anyone. I last referred Mrs Froggee for the basic rewards card in 2021 which she was persuaded to take out partly because of my enhanced referral bonus but mainly because she was thinking about ditching her platinum and that would have kept her rewards points alive. In the end she kept the platinum and rarely uses the basic rewards card so that certainly wouldn’t have been a profitable referral for Amex.

    I do hope I’m not on the Amex naughty step although I suspect this is unlikely given that I have two fee paying cards and put the bulk of my credit card spending through them!

    Another possible reason which I’ve not seen mentioned yet is that Amex are doing some segmented marketing analysis. Perhaps they want to understand the extent to which referral links are a primary driver in customer acquisition, or if customers would sign-up anyway but just follow a referral link to increase their bonus and help a friend maximise their points too?

    I’m sure Amex have the deep and long-term data to understand the trends and the expected sign-up volumes per card. By slashing (say) 50% of the referral links, they can then measure the impact on those volumes, which could help them understand the extent to which referrals actually drive new customer volumes.

      That would be rather silly of them. The results wouldn’t be representative because an unknown proportion of applicants would ask for someone else’s link

    Just a sudden thought: I suspect that a largish proportion of Amex users here have been referred at one time or another by Rob (or perhaps another family member).
    I have have certainly had two or three referrals from Rob…

    Is there a risk this could lose AMEX customers? I certainly count the referral bonus as part of the “value” of the card to offset the fee (in the same way as I view the HN and dining credits). If this is taken away, I’ll re-evaluate the value of the annual fee

      I don’t think there is much risk of Amex losing customers they mind about. If you are a customer that they rate and/or you make good referrals, you will retain the ability to make referrals. They are just being a bit more discriminating for which there is a good business case.

        I’ve been an Amex customer for 10 years. I’ve made tonnes of referrals for premium cards which are still active now. Have never taken the proverbial. Put a lot of spend through my Platinum.

        I’m blocked too.

        I was actually blocked about 10 months ago – queried it – then it came back after a bit. Now it’s gone again.

        So who knows.

        I suspect IT glitch.

      They have lost me, Like you I regards referral bonuses as part of the “value” of the card to offset the fee.
      I cancelled my 2 cards today and told them as such.

        If you couldn’t get value from the two cards you held without referrals, it sounds like they were the wrong products for you and quite possibly you also weren’t the right customer for Amex.

          Platinum earning rate is rubbish and they increase the referral bonus regularly for a reason.

    I’ve found that people just don’t “understand” when I’m referring them. They can’t get to grips with avios, they think credit cards are Satan’s work and can’t see them as profitable. Also I am finding it personally offensive when treated like snake oil saleswoman lol. So yeah, they’re harder to get done. I have no idea why amex is doing this and I couldn’t care less right now as I can’t find anyone new smart enough to have a go with my referral links.

    I personally took matters into my own hands and cancelled both my Amex Business and Personal Gold Cards and told them that I along with many others see this as a Snub to Loyal Amex users and i prefer to let them know by using my spending power elsewhere, I hope it helps others.

    Just checked and I’m blocked too! Utterly bizarre, I’ve referred maybe 3 people ever and 2 of those are still happily using their cards several years later, with no explicit churning…

          It’s a bit of a self selecting crowd on HfP though! If you asked 100 random Gold cardholders if they were blocked and the same % said yes then I’d tend to agree but ….

            I know 3 that aren’t HfP readers that are blocked. Never churned never referred. It’s far bigger than just a few HfP readers.

            My platinum referral link still works I just can’t see the option on the website.
