How to get a status match between Avis and

Avis and have a partnership which may allow you to get a status match across the two programmes.

These are not, perhaps, the two most obvious companies to run a status matching programme. That said, it is certainly worth taking advantage if you qualify.

There is also an interesting route to getting status with a Priority Pass airport lounge card or an American Express Preferred Rewards Gold credit card.

What status levels are being matched?

Got Avis status?

If you have Avis Preferred Plus, you will receive Silver status in Rewards.

If you have Avis President’s Club status, you will receive Gold status in Rewards.

Using American Express Preferred Rewards Gold to get Avis Preferred Plus:

Before you rush off to check, American Express Platinum does not give you Avis Preferred Plus although once you have linked your Platinum card to your Avis Preferred account you receive discounted rates.

(The American Express Platinum deal with Hertz is more generous, getting you Hertz Five Star status. If you have Amex Platinum you can register for Hertz Five Star and all of the other status schemes via this well-hidden page of the Amex website.)

However, following the 2022 changes, American Express Preferred Rewards Gold DOES give you Avis Preferred Plus status. You can register for the benefit here. This will get you Silver status.

Using Priority Pass to get Avis Preferred Plus:

If you have a Priority Pass airport lounge card, even a free one via American Express, you qualify for free Avis Preferred Plus status.

This HfP article explains how to get Avis Preferred Plus status from a Priority Pass.

You need to enrol in Avis Preferred using the special code and then, once your Avis Preferred Plus membership is showing, you will be able to upgrade your account to Silver status.

Using a World Elite Mastercard to get Avis President’s Club:

If you have the HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard, the Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard or a similar World Elite Mastercard, you join Avis at President’s Club level and get a match to Rewards Gold status. Use this website to claim your top tier Avis status.

Got status?

If you have Gold status in Rewards, you will receive Avis Preferred Plus membership.

Are these status levels worth having?

We wrote this review of Rewards here and you can see the details on the website here.

Silver status usually requires 10 nights per year whilst Gold requires 30 nights.

The benefits are rather nebulous. However, many hotels on the platform have agreed to give additional benefits to status members. The only guaranteed benefit is a two-hour additional late check-out for Gold members when booking a hotel marked ‘VIP’ on the site.

Silver members may receive free breakfast, free wi-fi or other hand-picked benefits when choosing a hotel on the ‘VIP’ list. You also get access to the price match promise which guarantees to reduce your rate if you find a lower price anywhere up to the point of check-in. This is a lot more flexible than most rate guarantee schemes.

Anecdotally, I know that the call centre is also often willing to cancel non-refundable bookings made by Gold members as a favour.

The key benefit of Rewards is the ability to get a free night for every 10 nights you stay as our review explains.

Details of Avis Preferred Plus can be found on its website here.

The ‘Plus’ level requires you to have done five rentals in the past year with a total value of €1,000+. Benefits are:

  • priority car availability
  • a free extra driver on every trip
  • a complimentary vehicle upgrade whenever possible

There is nothing radical here, especially as you get a free additional driver automatically whenever you book an Avis car via the British Airways / Avis partner site here.

Avis Preferred, at the basic level, is worth joining. You get a €15 voucher after your second rental and a free weekend rental after your third booking.

There is nothing life changing here, but if you use both and Avis it makes sense to upgrade your status if you can.

The main benefit for HfP readers, oddly, may be the ability to get Silver status via their American Express Preferred Rewards Gold or Priority Pass via their free Avis Preferred Plus status.

Apparently I’m Gold Status with and have been for 2 years – which surprised me as i havent had anywhere near 30 stays last year – or received any extras
I assume its some sort of COVID dividend as “status and stays have been carried over” last year – including the £2 Hostel I booked i Bangladesh to make sure I used the 9 pre COVID stays !

Is there an error in the text? American Express Platinum gives Avis Presidents Club?

  • Sandgrounder says:

I think you need to check your Platinum benefits enrolment dashboard- Avis Presidents Club is now a benefit. I successfully applied it before Christmas.

    • Sandgrounder says:

I had problems enrolling with an existing account but an email to Avis sorted things out pretty quickly.

      • David says:

Would you be able to share the Avis email address used?

        • Sandgrounder says:

          database.northern (at)
I sent my details and a screenshot of my platinum dashboard.
Received a sucessful reply within one working day.

    • Mattb says:

Yes did mine last week, someone on the forums shared a link to update your details and it was done in a few hours.

    • Skywalker says:

When I click the link via the Platinum benefits, I get the following:

I added Hertz and Avis in November, links were not working with my existent account and had to email them and amex. hertz sorted in one email. Avis and Amex kept insisting was each other duty… it went on for weeks… eventually Avis matched Hertz status. Glad to see that now they sorted it.

  • hedgecock says:

Yes, Amex Platinum now provides Avis President’s Club benefits which now makes them comparable to the Hertz Amex status, though you don’t get Hertz’s 4 hour grace period

  • Suzanne says:

Almost always get a room upgrade with Gold and sometimes something like a free bottle of wine. You can see which properties recognise VIP status when browsing.

  • Marc says:

Slightly separate but related, has anyone tried to sign up to get Hertz status with Amex platinum? I’ve found it near impossible to register for it as none of the forms/click-throughs to Hertz ever work?

  • Speedbird676 says:

I’ve found getting the gold status recognised a bit hit and miss, particularly the guaranteed late check out.

  • Reney says:

Do I have to book direct to benefit from Avis preferred? For example would bookings via BA, autoslash or other aggregator sites count? Thanks.

    • Patrick says:

yes it would count, I’ve booked with Autoshalsh a few times, ditto with BA, bookings always came with the status perks.
It’s worth noting that, if you need an additionnal driver, register your BAEC number directy in your Avis profile, it’s easier for the agents to see and check (it happenned to me a couple of times, just by pointing it out in some remote locations they were able to quickly confirm the free additionnal driver
