Barclaycard tweaks Avios earning on its credit cards

Barclaycard shook up the UK credit card market in 2022 when it launched its two Avios credit cards.

Notwithstand their creaky IT, we have seen some exceptional benefits:

Our review of the free Barclaycard Avios Mastercard is here. Our review of the paid-for Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard is here.

From 30th June 2023, Barclaycard is making a change to the cards. I would guess that it will have zero impact for 95% of HfP readers and probably 99% of broader cardholders, but it is worth flagging regardless.

There will be a monthly cap on Avios earning

Barclaycard is introducing a cap on the number of Avios you can earn each month.

This concept is not new. Virgin Atlantic has a cap on its two Virgin Atlantic Reward credit cards but the Barclaycard cap is FAR more generous.

If you have a Virgin Atlantic credit card, your monthly earning is capped at your credit limit. If you pay down your balance mid-month and run it up again, you won’t receive additional miles.

(For example, if your credit limit is £10,000 and you spend £8,000, pay it off after two weeks and then spend another £7,000, you will only earn Virgin Points on your first £10,000 of spending for that month.)

Barclaycard is limiting your monthly Avios earning to FOUR TIMES your credit limit.

Frankly, the number of people who spend their entire credit limit, pay it off, run it up again, pay it off etc x four must be tiny. It clearly is an issue for Barclaycard, however, hence this new rule.

It appears that the majority who do clear their account more than four times per month are doing so in relation to business spending. You cannot earn Avios on B2B purchases made with the Barclaycard Avios cards (see rule 4.4) and this change is part of a broader focus on enforcing this rule.

This rule change comes into force from 30th June 2023.

Does Amex have a similar rule?

  • AndyS says:

I applied for one of these cards on 31st March. It told me I’d hear in a few days whether successful, but haven’t heard anything yet! I was going to post here “is this common” but seeing comments above about their IT etc. it probably is. I wonder if they had a large amount of “last minute” applications for the million avios competition.

    • sam says:

seems odd as i suspect not much checking done other than credit check. i applied start of march and was accepted with £200 limit 2 days later.

      • AndyS says:

200 limit? Blimey can’t do much with that! How can you possibly get your 20k a year spend on that? That makes the 4x credit limit on points seem a lot more understandble.

        • TP Hunter says:

That’s the ‘holding’ credit limit they give when they haven’t yet verified your income.

          • AndyS says:

I see. Thanks. Been back to their website / FAQs and see

For most applications we are able to confirm whether you have been successful almost instantly. There are times however when we need a bit more time to access the required information or further information from you to be able to make a decision. If this is the case you’ll either receive a letter in the post within approximately 7-14 days detailing what we need you to provide to progress your application or a letter informing you that you have been unsuccessful at this time.

      • Rob says:

That’s the temporary limit until you submit the info they requested.

        • Angelamc11 says:

Mine has been £200 since it was opened in August. They won’t increase it despite sending documents and having a decent salary. I use the curve go back in time feature to accumulate around 15-20k points a month. Each night Mon to Fri I can pay off the £200 multiple times (within an 15 min window) allowing me to put as much as I want through the card using card. This was bad news for me this morning.

  • NFH says:

This reminds me of when I used my Hilton Barclaycard via Curve to contribute more than £50k into my SIPP just before Curve imposed a £10k monthly limit on debit-fronted credit in December 2021. My £20k credit limit meant that I had to pay off the balance several times in one month. I should have received more than 100,000 Hilton points, but it turns out that Barclaycard’s system can’t cope with more than 5 digits of points transfers to Hilton, so the initial 1 was missing on the points transfer, meaning that I received 100,000 points less than I should have done. This is a known issue and Barclaycard have a procedure to rectify it manually but only upon request.

    • QFFlyer says:

Not on request; it is manual, but in my experience it’s rectified whether you moan about it or not, it’s just that the multiples of 100k turn up separately, at some point a couple of weeks later.

  • Joe says:

I can’t see this being a problem for me. Barclaycard gave me a whopping £950 credit limit when I applied! I can hardly use the card for fear of going over the limit. 2-3 food shops and I have to put the card away so I don’t go over and get charged. Barely worth having 😂

    • BuildBackBetter says:

I received a 2k limit. Requested twice for an increase and was rejected even when I had the premier bank account and my salary was credited there. Closed both card and bank account once the 100k bonus was received.
If they cannot do basic stuff, the best policy is to pump and dump.

  • Simonbr says:

Anyone know.. Are we ever going to get an IHG points credit card in the UK following the messy end with Creation?

    • Rich says:

It wasn’t a messy end for some, I still have my card.

      • NFH says:

Yes, and my cards remain operational, even though Creation “closed” my accounts. But they don’t earn any points.

        • pauldb says:

I’m uncertain if my account is still active but IHG still show me as a credit card holder and so I have Platinum status. Is that a common hangover? Since that status currently has us in an enormous Presidential Suite, this mess has a few benefits still in play.

          • Rob says:

My wife shut her card account 4-5 years ago and still shows as a cardholder.

  • Nick says:

I’m going through it trying to apply for this card (upgrade from a Visa Plat.) IT on the phone says offer to upgrade should be there—app says no. Being passed pillar to post by Barclaycard 🙁

    • RussellH says:

Being passed from pillar to post is standard practice for B’card CS.

Senior CS staff assure me that all the info they need is available through their IT system, but when I tried to press them on training to use it…

So I suspect training is the real issue.

  • Myriad says:

Considering how low my Barclaycard credit limit is compared to my Amex it would entirely be possible I end up getting capped.

Small possibility at that, again very unlikely it happens to most people, still “unfair” for them to do it.

  • Layerden says:

Safe to say Amex still is the best card for heavy usage in the points game.
