IHG’s Six Senses takes five Mexican haciendas from Marriott

Marriott’s The Luxury Collection brand included five unique hacienda properties on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Merida is the most convenient airport for reaching them.

These are, as the name suggests, generally in remote areas and worth visiting primarily for the local wildlife and flora. The biggest, Hacienda Temozon, has just 28 rooms. Feedback was generally excellent.

IHG's Six Senses takes five haciendas in Mexico from Marriott

The five hacienda properties have now quietly moved over to IHG and appear, unrbanded, on the IHG website. They have @sixsenses.com email addresses which implies that they will be upgraded and slotted into the Six Senses brand.

Here are the links, together with summary comments from a Flyertalk thread:

  • Hacienda Campeche: “not a real hacienda, in the middle of Campeche town, not as charming as the other haciendas, but nice pool and beautiful courtyard with spacious rooms”
  • Hacienda Santa Rosa: “the smallest and very charming, nice pool, beautiful building and nice rooms”
  • Hacienda Temozon: “biggest hacienda with 28 rooms, very elegant, great pool and nice (but dark) rooms, they have their own cenote and you can get there by a donkey carriage.”
  • Hacienda Uayamon: “stunning setting, beautiful grounds, amazing pool and huge rooms (only suites)”

The haciendas are bookable at ihg.com for cash but not for IHG One Rewards points. It isn’t clear if you will earn IHG One Rewards points and have your elite benefits recognised whilst they remain unbranded.

I think that pic is the San Jose Hacienda, as we stayed there several years ago, in the top suite which takes up the entire building in your picture. It has its own private terrace, garden, and pool. I booked the base points room, was upgraded as Platinum, so that was a good day 🙂

It was a Luxury Collection property so the standards were high, and only has 10 rooms so a real boutique feel We had an amazing stay, would highly recommend. The gardens are a particular highlight.

      Thanks, uodated.

Thanks Rob! We had a lovely private dining candelit dinner on that terrace one evening, so it’s a memorable spot!

    • Chris says:

The SS Bhutan lodges operate in a similar way; the expectation is you would tour between them rather than stay in one place for a week.

  • JDB says:

Seems quite a strange move as these haciendas are a totally different concept to that of the Six Senses brand; does not bode well. It feels like IHG will debase both SS and Regent.

  • TGLoyalty says:

Surely these are more vignette collection than six senses

  • Oliver says:

Just at T5, the First Security lane is open!

    • Tariq says:

      Thanks for the update.

My perception of the previous strike in April was that the security process and staff in T5 were more efficient and friendly than usual…

      • No longer Entitled says:

Unions often don’t inform their members of what may happen if strike action actually improves services. LHR are probably wondering how easy it is to make this change permanent.

Meanwhile I have just had a passport returned within two weeks all during the five week strike. I guess that is an area the government will be looking for saving from in the near future.

        • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

HAL are more likely wondering how long it can afford to pay the agencies who are providing many of these workers at higher cost than their pay their own workforce.

Any company / government can throw resources at a short term problem but it does nothing to fix the long term issues..

All those that commented that all the passport desks were open during the Border Force strike and had never been through so quickly need to realise that the military basically provided free / cheap labour to the Home Office.

The Home Office could choose to man every passport desk every day of the week but it isn’t prepared to pay the cost for the Officers to do that.

          • No Longer Entitled says:

The military aren’t free. They are Gov’t employees that the Gov’t elected to deploy to cover for other Gov’t employees. We have 150,000 active service personal. Why not hand them control of the borders? When last asked (1939-45) they did an amazing job!

          • JDB says:

@BA Flyer – the cost of conceding to this small element of the workforce that has voted to strike and is refusing to put this offer to staff is considerably greater than the cost of agency staff. It would actually be cheaper for HAL to use all agency staff but they choose not to do this. There is additional pressure on HAL to control cost in light of the harsh H7 regulatory settlement which the airport and three airlines are now seeking to appeal.

          • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

Indeed the military aren’t free but the Home Office didn’t reimburse the MoD for the full costs of their salaries etc. the HO did apparently fund a £20 a day bonus – money that could have gone into the pot to meet pay awards.

Agreed – passed through Heathrow at Easter – quick and friendly security staff.

Passed through last week during normal operations – surly staff barking orders at passengers. Asked me three times to take my laptop/ iPad out my bag. Told them each time I didn’t have any electronics with me, then very slow screening.

Based on this experience I’d be happy with the temporary arrangements becoming permanent.

If I joined the IHG brand, I think I’d want to be quiet about it and remain unbranded too! 😂

I stayed at these haciendas and loved them – it was part of a longer roadtrip through the Yucatan peninsula hitting some of the more off-the-beaten track ruins and cenotes.

Uayamon has the biggest wow factor, with a pool inside the ruins on the site. Loved the vibe of Santa Rosa and San Jose – small, intimate, beautiful. Temozon was my least favorite one. The one in Campeche is really just a hotel in the city and given the proximity of Uayamon, makes sense to just stay at Uayamon.

I don’t think they’d be Six Senses without a refurb – all of them very quite dated, not really anything upscale, but absolutely lovely places with a lot of character.

Food was disappointing – the menu was exactly the same at San Jose, Santa Rosa and Temozon, which was a bit odd; also very average quality.

Not sure where the “local wildlife and flora” comes from – no different from elsewhere in Yucatan really 🙂 You definitely don’t visit for that.

    Anyway, highly recommended!
