Qatar Airways resumes direct Auckland flights – book for 180,000 Avios return in Business

Qatar Airways has announced the resumption of direct flights between Doha and Auckland.

This opens up an exceptional opportunity to fly in Business Class from the UK to New Zealand on Avios, with flights costing just 180,000 Avios return plus around £600 of taxes and charges per person.

If, that is, you can get around the Qatar Airways booking system ….

Auckland Qatar Airways

Post covid, Qatar Airways has been flying to Auckland via Adelaide in Australia. The tag to Auckland is now being dropped and replaced by a direct flight.

Services start on 1st September and will operate daily.

An Airbus A350-1000 is being scheduled, allowing passengers to benefit from the acclaimed Qsuite seat. We reviewed Qatar Airways Qsuite on the Airbus A350 here.

How to book this flight with Avios

The biggest ‘sweet spot’ in the entire Avios system is probably now Business Class from the UK to Australia / New Zealand for 180,000 Avios + taxes and charges per person.

This price only applies to Qatar Airways flights. The British Airways service to Sydney is 250,000 to 300,000 Avios per person, return, in Business Class, on the rare chance you can get seats.

What is even better is that Qatar Airways guarantees to make two Business Class seats available on each flight.

Once those two seats have gone, additional seats are often available for ‘double Avios’. If you needed ‘double Avios’ for all four legs (UK to Doha, Doha to Auckland, Auckland to Doha, Doha to UK) then a return Business Class flight would cost 360,000 Avios. In reality you may pay less as you can mix and match ‘double Avios’ and ‘single Avios’ legs if available.

Qatar Airways A350 to Auckland

No-one has yet figured out when Qatar Airways releases the two ‘standard price’ Business Class seats

Qatar Airways does NOT operate like British Airways. You do not get the two ‘guaranteed’ standard rate Business Class seats appearing immediately when the schedules open.

On Day 1, you usually see only ‘double Avios’ seats available in Business Class. These are marked with a green ‘Q2’ in the booking system.

Roughly 10-14 days later, the two guaranteed seats at standard pricing seem to appear – most of the time.

Some standard rate dates are bookable today

Booking for this new Auckland service only opened today so I wasn’t expecting standard rate Avios seats in Business Class to be available.

However, I did find a few dates. Here is availability from Birmingham to Auckland for October:

and inbound:

The total cost is 180,000 Avios plus £541 in taxes and charges in Business Class.

The cost is meant to be identical if you book Qatar Airways flights on ba.com. However, due to tech weirdness, non-London UK departures often need more Avios if booked on the BA site.

You’ve got another snag – limited UK availability to Doha

Let’s assume that, in 10 days or so, Qatar Airways switches all of the remaining Business Class Avios availability from Doha to Auckland to standard pricing, not double pricing.

You might still be unable to get a seat at 180,000 Avios return because of the inability to get a seat from London Heathrow to Doha for the first leg and final leg.

London Gatwick availability is also tight because Qatar Airways has just scrapped its second daily Gatwick service. The airline has consolidated passengers from the cancelled flight onto the remaining one.

Your best bet for standard rate Avios availability from the UK to Doha this Autumn – assuming you are looking for seats from 1st September when the Auckland flights start – is from Birmingham.

Qatar Airways has only just resumed flights from Birmingham and, until cash and reward demand builds up, seat availability should be OK.

You can see in my example above that I chose Birmingham as my departure point. This wasn’t through choice – it was simply impossible to get a flight from London on the right day. Of course, if you’re happy to spend a few days in Doha in transit then it is not an issue.

Conclusion

Auckland is returning from 1st September as a direct flight from Doha on Qatar Airways.

This means that one-stop 180,000 Avios return redemptions in Business Class from the UK to Auckland are now back too.

This is exceptional value given that you will struggle to find cash fares to Australasia in Business Class for under £4,500 this year.

If I want to cancel a BA companion voucher flight, am I correct in thinking I get all the miles back and taxes paid less something like £40. If so, how long does the avios take to return?.

    Thinking of re-routing via Doha.

    Thanks

    • Geoff says:

Yes – you get all the avios and the voucher back pretty much straight away but the cash (minus £35 per person) usually takes a bit longer.

  • Roberto says:

Early this year I booked 2 OW business seats MAD-DOH-AKL for a November flight with standard price. At that time with stop at ADL, few days ago my tickets were rebooked by QR to the new direct flight DOH-AKL.

  • Bernard says:

I must be lucky I have been able to book 2 business class flights to Sydney on the Avios site on two occasions by going on line for midnight the day they are released. I booked for February 2024 for 170000 + 750 one way using a 2-4-1 voucher I then paid to book our seats together. This is flying on a Sunday which is a peak date for my return flight I did not use the second leg of the 2-4-1 voucher I booked my return from AKL to London with Qatar.
On the Avios site in the same way I booked my first flight at midnight from AKL-ADL-DOH-LON the one way cost 180000 + £340 for the two of us. I then had a chat with Qatar using the app and booked the seats we wanted in Qsuite for free, as you can see this has offered better value then booking with BA.
The flight has now been charged for the new route AKL-DOH-LON.

    • Jerry says:

@Bernard I think this is my strategy so grateful to see it confirmed as a sensible plan. I have 241 SYD booked for April 2024 and waiting for T355 for the return options to open up. I also noted 180,000 and very low charges with Qatar to return from AKL via Doha. Did you consider a stopover in Doha? (Is the cancellation policy for Qatar via BA the same i.e. £35pp?). This would appear better value than returning from SYD with BA at between 145,000 – 170,000 and around £750 charges and you get to visit NZ.

      Any other thoughts anyone? Thanks.

    • John B says:

Hi, thanks for the heads up regarding booking business class seats for free. We have now done this on our SydneyDoha/Heathrow flight. Thanks

  • Sergio says:

How do I book a round trip journey using Avios with Qatar? Do I need to wait until seats are available both ways before booking? Or is it like BA, where I’d book the outbound and then have to phone Qatar to book the return when I see seats have become available.

    • Rob says:

As there are no vouchers involved, you can book each leg separately as long as the combined taxes isn’t much different from a return.

  • robert says:

2 points wonder if Rob or anyone knows
    1. does anyone know how to find these flights with just 180k points? is there a search tool?
2 done this trip already this year via BA site but got downgraded on home leg DOH- LHR. nightmare in economy not recommended. its a massive fall from Qsuite to economy. wife was apoplectic but made no difference. knew in advance but hoped they would sort , however unless avios seats came available (they didnt ) then they said nothing could be done. had to sit next to a drunk for 7 hours asleep in his food. literally.

    • Rob says:

      1. No

    • NorthernLass says:

Have you had anything by way of compensation, or even the price difference refunded?
I have DOH-MAN in economy in December but thought it would be bearable on a day flight! QR seem to mess people about a lot.

  • Lady London says:

Can’t see how any downgrade compensation would apply on a DOH-UK/EUR leg on Qatar as EU261 governs any airline departing UK/EUR but on legs departing from elsewhere only governs UK/EUR based airlines so I think Qatar escapes compensating you 75% of cost of the flight on which you were downgraded.

This is not the first case reported here and it’s worrying as a picture is beginning to build that Qatar is targeting award seats for downgrades. And possibly offloading award seat passengers off desirable flights (timing, equipment) onto worse flights ahead of other passengers as well.

    • babyg says:

Not sure there is clear evidence of this (same thing came up on flyertalk), more anecdotal evidence id say, i will say people who book on points are more likely to post here hence it may “appear” points bookings are being targeted, ive did two award flights back to AUS/NZ without issue – well one small issues being unable to change/upgrade my BA Avios booking in Doha for some reason.

    • NorthernLass says:

I agree re EU261, that’s why I asked if “any kind” of compo was offered. I don’t know what QR tend to do in these scenarios! I know it’s anecdotal but we seem to be hearing more about QR messing people around than BA these days …

  • Arthur says:

I’m a bit confused on the Qatar vs BA pricing using Avios, can anyone clarify the situation please?
If i book with BA on Qatar flights, LHR to BKK for example, one way is 75,000 + £396.81 in Business, but the same flights booking with Qatar is 150,000 Avios + £399.61. How come Qatar price it at double the Avios?

    • Rob says:

This is NOT the same flight, or at least shouldn’t be.

The price is 75k. Via the Qatar website, additional seats are offered at double Avios, which is why you see 150k. These seats should NOT be bookable via ba.com.

(I’m not saying they never are, because there are IT issues, but they shouldn’t be.)

  • Bernard says:

Refreshing to see this. Hopefully HFP readers do well.
Just had to suffer a European club flight with a group of drunk ‘children’ with flyertalk labels on their bags. Very sad bunch – and disruptive to cabin service.
Nice to see more mature attitudes on here and I suspect qatar crew are better at dealing with this. And harder to be a drunken group in Q suites 🙂
