Norse Atlantic swaps Fort Lauderdale for Miami

Norse Atlantic continues to tweak its schedules. After announcing a raft of Winter Sun destinations, including Barbados, Kingston and Montego Bay, the airline has made a further change to its Autumn / Winter timetable with the addition of Miami.

Departing from Gatwick, the flights will operate four times a week from 18th September on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Flight times vary slightly by day:

Norse Atlantic swaps Fort Lauderdale for Miami
  • Z0 721 departs at 2pm and arrives at 6:35pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
  • Z0 721 departs at 10am and arrives at 2:35pm on Sundays

Return flights are equally varied, with the Sunday return three hours earlier than normal.

The route will replace Fort Lauderdale, which is the Gatwick or Stansted equivalent of the greater Miami area. Norse Atlantic says that “Customers travelling on our Fort Lauderdale route after 17 September will be rebooked onto our new Miami service or offered a full refund.”

Flights to Miami are now bookable on the Norse website and start at £450, although that only gets you the basics – no seat reservation, luggage or food included. You can read our review of flying Premium on Norse Atlantic from Gatwick to New York here.

  • Alex G says:

Fort Lauderdale is a destination in its own right (unlike Gatwick or Stansted), and a major cruise port. Pity Norse is axing the direct flight.

    • The real Swiss Tony says:

Yep, I felt the “like STN” analogy was rather misguided, too…

      • zapato1060 says:

Geographically, its actually bang on. FL airport is bliss and much less manic than Miami’s Zoo and I dont mean the ones with the animals.

      • Rhys says:

Virtually any airline that can get slots at Miami drops their FLL service.

      • Paul says:

100%. Would rather fly into FLL any day rather than MIA. Better positioned to get out to the rest of Florida, nice small-ish airport and great beaches on the doorstep.

    • Richie says:

Is JetBlue’s rumoured FLL-LGW service starting soonish ?

    • Andrew. says:

It’s looking like a considerable mistake for the airport/port operator not to have worked with Brightline and have the Fort Lauderdale Brightline station at the airport (the line passes in front of the terminal and under the runway) instead of downtown Fort Lauderdale.

      • Mike says:

Yes, the lack of a Brightline terminal is a massive miss. The Americans, quite frankly, don’t think like us as far as public transport goes. Additionally, Brightline is more of a property play, like railways were here a century or more ago. Looking a where Brightline West stops on the way to Vegas show how bonkers they are. That said, I wish them luck as I want to get trains rather than fly.

        • zapato1060 says:

Area is so expanse but when you see drive thru ATMs, you know your never seeing a changed mentality on public transport. Also less chances of inadvertently lowering their infamous waist lines.

    • NorthernLass says:

Indeed, my first thought is why would anyone want to fly from MIA?! Though on reflection, I suppose there are so many onward connections from MIA that there’s potentially a lot of business for any airline which flies there. It’s a shame, though.

  • Clare says:

Agreed. Many choose FL over Miami as a destination for holiday never mind an airport. Clumsy analogy.

  • SammyJ says:

FLL is also far more useful than MIA for the Orlando crowd, which a very large proportion of travellers on these flights are, same as TPA. Very disappointed to hear this route has been pulled.

    • zapato1060 says:

TPA is even better than FLL. Took 15 mins from plane > bag > street.

      • SammyJ says:

Before we got Global Entry, I actively chose TPA over MCO as my preferred airport if we were going to the Disney end of Orlando!

  • Chris W says:

I’m curious if anyone here actually uses the twilight bag drop. I appreciate it’s a much quicker check-in time but it requires two trips to the airport, and you would need to farewell things like your toiletries the night before.

I just can’t see any families wanting to go to an airport two days in a row.

    • Rob says:

If you’re staying at the airport overnight, which is likely at Manchester if you’re flying early because the long haul fights serve a huge catchment area, you might do it.

You just can’t brush your teeth before you fly!

      • The real Swiss Tony says:

By that logic you can’t put on clean clothes or use deodorant, either. I think you’re missing the point, Rob 😉

More seriously, used it a few years back at Gatwick when going skiing. We were staying in the bloc hotel so it made perfect sense and couldn’t have been more convenient. And for the avoidance of doubt, toothbrushes and a change of clothes were in our carry on bags…

        • zapato1060 says:

Im with Chris W. Its must be very niche. However Hong Kong’s check in at central train station. Now! thats ground breaking.

          • The real Swiss Tony says:

It’s good but not really ground breaking, given they had the same service at Victoria for Gatwick back in the 1990s if not before, and at Paddington for Heathrow pre 9/11…

      • SammyJ says:

This is why it would be even more useful at Heathrow – the catchment area there is effectively the entire country!

    • mvcvz says:

      “Farewell” is not a verb.

    • Rich says:

I’ve used it a few times. If you’re staying the night at the airport, you may well be passing near the check in desks anyway.

Saves lugging bags to and from the hotel, and saves the risk of a check in queue at 6am. You just have to put a spare pair of pants in your hand luggage.

Even better if one person can drop bags for the whole party.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

You can take toiletries through security, certainly you can take toothpaste and deodorant which seems adequate to me

  • vlcnc says:

OT but just thought people might like to know I got my 1,000 Avios from Uber for £1.20 ticket Edinburgh Haymarket to Edinburgh Waverley 🙂

    • Mike says:

I got mine 30th May, for my £4.10 journey I was doing anyway to get back from work, so nice bonus. For anyone think of using Uber to buy a train ticket and was wondering how it works. You buy in the app and the ticket is sent to your email address, so make sure you have access to your email.

Pride party showing as sold out now

  • His Holyness says:

Many brands change their logo colours for Pride month in support of the LGBTQI+ community.
    Hopefully HfP be following suit?

    • astra19 says:

What does that do other than pointless pandering? If every company *has* to do it there’s no point. Much like Waitrose decking their British social media and doing… nothing for their UAE outlet, it’s meaningless.

    • Alex G says:

      Hopefully not.

Its just companies jumping on a bandwagon. It’s insincere and irritating.

  • Aso01 says:

Thanks for posting about the pride party. Went ahead and booked some tickets this morning before they sold out. Not sure if it is a great deal, but have alot of Hilton points and had some time to fill that evening between events, so thought it was worth a try!
