With Easter out of the way and thoughts of summer breaks coming to the fore, I thought it was worth another look at the new routes that British Airways will fly from London Stansted in 2024.

There was a flurry of coverage about this news when it was announced late last year, because it was so unexpected, but I think most people have forgotten that it was coming.

This is very much a ‘toe in the water’ for now as you will see.

Flights will be on Embraer 190 aircraft. These have 2×2 seating in both Club Europe and Euro Traveller.

Unlike Cityflyer flights from London City, there IS a lounge at Stansted – the Escape lounge. It’s pretty poor and usually heaving, although the upcoming Emirates lounge will relieve a lot of the pressure on it. Our last review of the Escape lounge at Stansted is here.

Last time I used these BA from stansted a few years ago I was told the escape lounge contract hadn’t been renewed and was turned away. Wonder if the lounge will be accessible this summer ……

  • Russ says:

I think you have the times wrong and the flying time. My understanding that the outbound flights from Stansted were on Saturdays and the returns were on Sundays. Also how can it take take a hour and 15 for a example to fly to stanstead from the destination but take over 2 hours to fly from Stansted to it. I think you should check your info

    • Rob says:

No. Aircraft go out from City on Sat, return to Stansted (City is shut), overnight there, fly out on Sun and then return to City as it has now opened.

    • Peter Evans says:

      Russ,

One houe time difference on the continent will make flights appear shorter Europe to UK and longer UK ot Europe.

On shorter flights it gets even more ‘confusing’. As an example, leave Brussels 8am and arrive London 7.50am. Going the other way, leave London 9am and arrive Brussels 10.50am. Flight is 50 mins in both directions.

  • Peter Evans says:

    Rob,

theese are not so much about toe-dipping but more about utilising aircraft that would otherwise get ‘locked in’ over the weekend when London City shuts Saturday 1pm to Sunday 10.45am. A legacy from 1987 when the airport first opened that needs to be scrapped. Crazy that London’s most central airport has an enforced and illogical closure given the amount of new development that has taken place around the airport.

  • David Bentley says:

Why don’t you ask which routes BA will fly from Manchester this summer? It’s easy – London Heathrow and Billund, the latter by franchise operation Sun Air.

It’s the same every year. A few years ago they put some of these London City based a/c into Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol over the weekend but didn’t take long to sack the routes.

Walsh decided that MAN was airport non grata 20 years ago and boy have we known about it. Since he left the sinking ship it has merely been a case of inertia.

‘British Airways’ is a national disgrace the way it has treated the north of England and the Midlands is even worse off. The last time ‘British Airways’ mainline was in Birmingham was in 2007. Prior to that it was BEA wasn’t it?

And no, I don’t accept the weak economic arguments, which were thought up by Walsh and his buddies too long ago to have relevance in 2024.

    ‘British’ Airways my arse.
