Did you know nine Hilton brands don’t offer upgrades to Gold and Diamond members?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

When we cover Hilton Honors on Head for Points, we usually make reference to the fact that it offers the best mid-tier hotel status in the industry.

Whilst Hilton Honors Diamond Elite status requires a bit of effort, Hilton Honors Gold Elite is relatively easy to achieve:

(I would expect the match to start offering status to March 2026, rather than March 2025, very soon so don’t rush to apply. It tends to roll over another year at some point in April.)

The key benefit of Hilton Honors Gold Elite is free breakfast at the majority of brands, either given directly or as something you can choose as your ‘My Way’ brand benefit. Hotels in the US give a food and beverage cash credit instead.

Another benefit is some sort of upgrade. These are rarely spectacular as a Gold, but most mid-tier hotel statuses don’t even try to upgrade you.

As a Diamond member, you can expect better – although you won’t get it very often. The rules say that upgrades for a Diamond “may include upgrades up to “junior”, “standard” or “one-bedroom” suites”

Not all Hilton Honors brands offer upgrades

You might be surprised to find that not all Hilton Honors brands offer upgrades.

This is written down, fair and square, in the terms and conditions, but most of the time we don’t know or forget.

These are the Hilton Honors brands which do NOT offer upgrades to Gold or indeed Diamond members:

  • Embassy Suites
  • Hampton by Hilton
  • Hilton Garden Inn
  • Hilton Grand Vacations
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton
  • Home2 Suites by Hilton
  • Motto by Hilton
  • Spark by Hilton
  • Tru by Hilton

As a UK-based Hilton Honors member, most of these exclusions won’t concern you most of the time.

By far the most important exclusion is Hampton by Hilton. Hampton properties have been springing up across Europe in recent years and I am generally positive about them.

Hilton Garden Inn has also seen UK growth recently, most noticeably with the Hilton Garden Inn Heathrow T2/T3 which we reviewed here. This was the second Hilton Garden Inn at Heathrow, after the rebranded Jurys Inn at Hatton Cross.

Which Hilton Honors brands do give upgrades?

The Hilton Honors rules specifically state that Gold and Diamond members are eligible for upgrades at the following brands:

  • Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts
  • LXR Hotels & Resorts
  • Conrad Hotels & Resorts
  • Canopy by Hilton
  • Hilton Hotels & Resorts
  • Curio – A Collection by Hilton
  • DoubleTree by Hilton
  • Tapestry Collection by Hilton

Does the ‘no upgrades’ rule really matter?

It is debatable whether these rules matter much. Hampton and Hilton Garden Inn hotels often do not have larger rooms to which you could be upgraded.

On the other hand, they definitely do have ‘better’ rooms – perhaps on higher floors, or with better view. Would this count as an ‘upgrade’?

Some hotels will ignore the brand rules anyway, of course. It would be very short-sighted of any hotel to fail to recognise the status of a regular brand guest, as opposed to, say, a tour group or someone who has booked through an online travel agent.

Someone has to be given the better rooms (and the worse rooms, of course) and it would be odd not to reflect status when allocating who goes where.

An upgrade at a Hampton isn’t really an upgrade in my book as they’re not set up with incremental levels of luxury and associated pluses eg lounge. Higher floor, corner, meh. Can live without. So I’m never bothered if I get upgrade or not (I’ve been told with a smile many times that I’ve been upgraded at Hampton Bath, but every room kind of looks the same, so it doesn’t feel like an upgrade; worth pointing out that there are some very odd shaped rooms here, so who know what an upgrade or downgrade is). It’s the luxury brands where Diamond pays off.

Just dropped to Gold a couple of weeks ago and so missed out on being Diamond on my trip to the Hilton Dalaman, prompted by the reader review published a few years back on this site. I was in Dalaman anyway and decided to add a couple of nights at the all-including Hilton. Not really one for all-inclusives but this was a nice place to spend a few days.
I am on the lookout for a Diamond Status Challenge.
Didn’t want to ‘waste’ my once in a lifetime Diamond Extension.

OT – can you still get pro rata fee refunds with the Amex Platinum card? Also, if you’ve never had one (but had a gold card within the last 2 years) do you still get the welcome bonus? Thanks!

Currently at Hampton by Hilton, Gatwick North. I chose my room, so no upgrade per se although they happen to be doing some sort of a refurb on the 6th floor.

What I’ll give them huge kudos for is not only plentiful sockets, but also each side of the bed has a 3 pin, USB-A & USB-C socket!

  • Tom says:

Early and late checkin and checkout is worth more to me than a room upgrade. And checking in early means fewer better rooms are available for upgrade. Classic case of one benefit negating another.

But as HH Diamond I get upgraded at most properties anyway, except for HGI and Hampton where an upgrade does not mean much anyway.

  • Bryan says:

What’s evidently clear is the brand guidelines, are just that, guidelines the hotel is under no obligation to provide.

The Digital Key offering from Hilton is another issue that always puzzles me greatly. Choose your ‘non upgraded’ room, request digital key, avoid check in, and miss put on asking staff for upgrade, not to mention not being able to collect any Additional Value the individual hotel offers, for example, drinks or snacks vouchers.

In central London tonight, no upgrade despite requesting at check in as we are ‘almost full’

Despite several grades of potential upgrades available. ???

  • KJT says:

Stayed at HGI Silverstone in January . Corner suite upgrade and 4 drinks vouchers as diamond . Hilton Gateshead is pretty poor on the upgrades but the lounge and breakfast make up for it.

    • Bryan says:

Controversial…. Lounge probably has the best view in the UK, but find the Gigi’s a major let down.

      Unless you ‘really’ like nachos

    • Rob says:

Got a good upgrade at Gateshead last Monday.

      • Bryan says:

Always good for a balcony room at Gateshead. If only the food in the lounge mirrored that of the always fantastic service you receive.

  • Delbert says:

We’ve stayed at Hilton Bottle Bank twice in recent years to enjoy the view from a balcony suite. The premium lounge isn’t up to much and breakfast not value for money in our opinion (next time we’ll eat out). Excellent location and the balcony suite is more than acceptable accommodation for our needs.
