American Airlines launches Edinburgh to Philadelphia flights

American Airlines is heading back to Scotland, with the relaunch of flights between Edinburgh and Philadelphia next year.

The route was last operated in 2019 and, to date, seemed to have been a permanent victim of the pandemic.

Flights will operate daily.

American Airlines launches Edinburgh to Philadelphia flights

The service launches on 24th May and ends on 5th October.

The full timings are:

  • AA279 departs Edinburgh at 11:35 and arrives in Philadelphia at 14:00
  • AA278 departs Philadephia at 19:05 and lands in Edinburgh at 07:00 the following morning.

Both flights are seasonal, from the 23rd May until the 5th October, and will be operated by a Boeing 787-8. These feature a unique rear and forward facing herringbone in business class. Flights should, in theory, be bookable with Avios although American Airlines is not as generous as British Airways when it comes to transatlantic reward availability.

    4.5 hours on the ground is a long time for a 787 and will cause gate-blocking issues at EDI (meaning more remote stands for everyone else). But hopefully it does well, United has thrown a lot at Scotland and it seems to have stuck.

    Absolutely agree with the commenter above suggesting a ‘central scotland’ airport. This is a no-brainer really, there would be many more routes and airlines if this existed.

    Arrived back to EDI on 30th Aug, took well over an hour to get our bags off the belt
    Only 1 belt operating (no7?) and no8 stationary but carnage caused by some luggage drivers being faster than others which meant an ATL flight beat us to the belt and MCO was left in its wake even though it landed 45 mins after, still people waiting from Washington too, some prestigious golfer lost it and told his entourage to sort it out and he departed the scene of tired and angry souls.

    Baggage info board said baggage delivery complete and dropped off the screen but still loads left to be delivered
    A tannoy message later stopped a bit of panic but this is not the first time they showed the incapability to cope when under pressure
    Airport infrastructure is unable to support its passenger capacity
    SORT IT OUT!

      same thing happened to a relative a few days ago; arrived on the morning Qatar flight and then waited over an hour on the bags arriving. For me, lesson learned not to be optimistic and arrive in the car park too early.

        Should have mentioned I’ve had baggage delays there before, comes to a point where I’m considering paying more from another airport
        Check in and security was very poor on way out, seriously ate into my time planned in the lounge.
        Flying premium but no one could construct proper lines so Economy plebians also mixed in with us haha, how we laughed and then cried

    If they’re the Zodiac seats then they are indeed unique, in that only about 4 seats in the entire cabin are not affected by the movement of an adjoining passenger in their seat!

    I just wonder what the transit is like at PHL . My last AA flight was a few years back and at a very busy ORD . I would not want to repeat that .

      At PHL your bags have a 70% chance of coming out on another belt than they originally tell you, I think the bag handlers do that to amuse themselves. Transit options are the regional rail which leaves every half hour to downtown Philadelphia. Taxis are a fixed rate downtown with a taxi queue, and Lyft/Uber available if you want to stand for 15 minutes with your mobile phone.

      Done it twice, as PHI is first US port of call had to retrieve luggage and go through immigration
      Then proceed to drop off luggage point, they managed to lose a suitcase the second time which was not ideal, took a year to get funds back on replacement clothes
      Other than that immigration was better here than MCO, MIA or JFK
