Arguably the last place you would expect to see a cashback offer for British Airways and BA Holidays is on non-Avios Visa or Mastercard credit cards, but one has turned up!

It isn’t crazily generous but for most people it will be worth moving spend away from a British Airways American Express card.

You are looking for an offer like this (the MBNA version is pictured):

British Airways MBNA cashback

You will need to opt-in.

We have reports of it appearing on cards from MBNA, Lloyds, Halifax and Curve.

Here are the terms, which are the same for both offers:

  • receive 5% cashback on direct spend with British Airways or BA Holidays
  • spending must be made by 18th December
  • cashback is capped at £30
  • you only receive cashback on one transaction

Should you move spend from your British Airways American Express?

The free BA American Express card earns 1 Avios per £1 of BA or BA Holidays spend. Unless you are spending £3,000+ it is worth putting a booking on your Lloyds / MBNA card instead, assuming you value an Avios at 1p.

The paid-for BA American Express Premium Plus card earns 3 Avios per £1 of BA or BA Holidays spend, because you earn double Avios on BA transactions. This means that the break-even point is nearer to £1,000 because of the £30 cap on the cashback – spend more than £1,000 and you should stick with your Amex.

The sweet spot is a transaction of around £500-£600 which maximises the cashback (5% of £600 is £30 which is the most you can receive) whilst minimising the lost Avios from not using a British Airways American Express.

  • Jjh4yb says:

Of course a Curve card linked to an Avios Barclaycard helps mitigate the loss through Amex

  • Matthew says:

Not on either my Lloyds or MBNA card 😞

  • Arthur says:

It’s on my Halifax account and can be used with either the debit card or the Clarity Mastercard.
I’ve a BA holiday balance to pay in Jan so I assume that if I pay £600 off of the holiday bill before 18 Dec I’ll qualify for the max £30 back?

  • Andrew J says:

The offer I have on my BAPP is for BA Holidays – spend £3000, get 3000 Avios.

  • Ben says:

I had to scroll endlessly right down to the bottom of Lloyds list of everyday offers and found both below Dobbies garden centre.

Only the BA, but not the holiday, on my Halifax – the card I use for travel.

  • Toby says:

If I were to use my Lloyds card for this offer to book a holiday, would I not have the AMEX holiday insurance cover?

    • Jonathan says:

Maybe if you part pay with the Amex card, I’m not entirely sure

You’ve not mentioned which Amex card you’re using…

  • Gordon says:

To access certain insurance benefits, you need to use your American Express Card to pay for the trip.

Someone might know more in depth about this!

    • George K says:

My understanding is that benefits apply even if a tiny portion of the total is paid by the Amex. So if you can split the payments (as you can with BA Hols), you might be able to take advantage of this.

  • TomB says:

Got this on Curve metal or whatever they’re calling it these days. Also on my free BA card I have a BA holidays offer for 1,500 avios on £2k spend.
