Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get 5% cashback on your BA spend with various non-Avios non-Amex credit cards!

Arguably the last place you would expect to see a cashback offer for British Airways and BA Holidays is on non-Avios Visa or Mastercard credit cards, but one has turned up!

It isn’t crazily generous but for most people it will be worth moving spend away from a British Airways American Express card.

You are looking for an offer like this (the MBNA version is pictured):

British Airways MBNA cashback

You will need to opt-in.

We have reports of it appearing on cards from MBNA, Lloyds, Halifax and Curve.

Here are the terms, which are the same for both offers:

  • receive 5% cashback on direct spend with British Airways or BA Holidays
  • spending must be made by 18th December
  • cashback is capped at £30
  • you only receive cashback on one transaction

Should you move spend from your British Airways American Express?

The free BA American Express card earns 1 Avios per £1 of BA or BA Holidays spend. Unless you are spending £3,000+ it is worth putting a booking on your Lloyds / MBNA card instead, assuming you value an Avios at 1p.

The paid-for BA American Express Premium Plus card earns 3 Avios per £1 of BA or BA Holidays spend, because you earn double Avios on BA transactions. This means that the break-even point is nearer to £1,000 because of the £30 cap on the cashback – spend more than £1,000 and you should stick with your Amex.

The sweet spot is a transaction of around £500-£600 which maximises the cashback (5% of £600 is £30 which is the most you can receive) whilst minimising the lost Avios from not using a British Airways American Express.

  • Aliks says:

This super special BA offer reminds me of the golden era of special offers in the 1970’s.

I well remember being told to run down to the local Co-Op before they closed for the day to get their special offer of a halfpenny off on a tin of Kattomeat.

    Those were the days.

    • Gordon says:

I would add, Blackjacks, and fruit salad sweets, and a small bottle of Babycham (that’s still a thing you know) for a birthday treat! Those definitely were the days, haha.

  • ADS says:

on both my Lloyds and Halifax

not on my MBNA (previously bmi) – I wonder if it’s still setup for no other airline offers?!

    • Tony says:

It’s on my MBNA which is a legacy of the bmi card so that’s not the qualifier. I do put a lot of overseas spend on it (but flights only when the airline doesn’t take Amex…)

      • ADS says:

ah – maybe it’s the overseas spend that triggers it

I use both Lloyds and Halifax overseas but never my MBNA

        RIP bmi

  • A Vamps says:

Both offers on my Lloyds bank card. As someone else said, I had to scroll right to the bottom and they were the last two. As I have some BA payments coming up, I wonder if I can use the card for part payment on a holiday that has already been booked?

  • Rob says:

    It will work fine.

  • CheshirePete says:

Not on my Halifax, and I have their Ultimate account and 2 of their credit cards.

  • Rob says:

    Reward, Cardlytics

  • Zain says:

Listed under the Rewards section in the Curve app – I’m on the free subscription
Would this work if I paid the cash element of a points redemption? I assume so but just wanted to check

  • tony says:

I don’t think buy on board gets processed by BA though – isn’t it Tourvest or some such entity?

Agree with the dashboard mind – am juggling various discount codes against a hotel booking in London next weekend. £50 off Hilton, £75 of IHG, £100 off Marriott…
