Get a 25% bonus when you transfer Nectar points to Avios – worth it?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Avios has launched a conversion bonus for anyone sitting on a pile of Nectar points.

Let’s take a look at the deal. Full details are on avios.com here.

The standard conversion rate of Nectar points to Avios is 400 : 250. This has remained unchanged despite two devaluations for people converting in the opposite direction.

As a Nectar point is worth 0.5p when spent at Sainsburys, Argos etc, you are giving up £2 of free shopping in return for 250 Avios. In other words, you are buying Avios for 0.8p. This is a decent deal.

Until 30th April, you will receive a 15% or 25% bonus on every transfer INTO Avios.

A one-off transfer will get you a 15% bonus.

An auto-conversion transfer will get you a 25% bonus. Assuming you are moving over your entire Nectar balance, you might as well activate auto-convert and then, if you wish, disable it later.

(For clarity, there is no bonus in the opposite direction. The rate from Avios into Nectar remains at 400:400.)

This looks pretty attractive. For every 400 Nectar points you convert, you will receive (with a 25% bonus) 312 Avios.

Put another way, you are giving up £2 of free shopping to earn 312 Avios, so you are ‘paying’ 0.64p per Avios. It’s an excellent return.

If you happen to be sitting on a pile of Nectar points with no real plan for them, you should seriously think about this deal.

What is the small print?

There doesn’t seem to be much, which is good:

  • The offer runs to 30th April
  • Transfers must be in multiples of 400 Nectar points
  • You can make multiple transfers in that period and get the bonus on all of them

It seems that anyone who already auto-converts their Nectar points into Avios will receive the bonus automatically.

I expect the bonus to post in arrears, not with the original transfer.

The usual caps apply – you can manually transfer a maximum of 80,000 Nectar points into Avios per calendar month so, as this offer does not straddle a month end, you are capped at 80,000 Nectar points. Automatic conversions are capped at a lower level – a maximum of 40,000 Nectar points per calendar quarter.

The only caveat I would make is to remind you that Marriott Bonvoy will become a Nectar transfer partner very soon – see here. If you value Marriott points as much as (or more than) Avios, you may want to hold off and see how good that deal turns out to be.

Just had my Nectar account hacked and 7500 nectar points stolen today so as a precaution I have unlinked the accounts to avoid loosing a shed load of Avios !
Nectar have replaced the card and number but now have concerns over their online security and reluctant to link the accounts again

    • Rob says:

You can lock your Nectar account in the app now to stop all withdrawals.

      • Gillian says:

Does locking prevent auto transfer from Nectar to Avios?

        • Rob says:

          I suspect so.

          • George says:

I hope not – I’ve just reactivated auto convert for this offer so hoping that isn’t blocked by my spending lock!

I suspect it’s only for in-store Argos/Sainsbury’s redemptions which I think has the majority of fraud

          • Nicholas says:

Hi, the new Nectar in-app lock, still allows the auto-transfers to occur on the usual Monday evenings. This is specifically addressed too, in the Nectar FAQs. Plus, my auto-converts to Avios have occurred as usual, with my Nectar app lock switched on.

  • Gillian says:

Has anyone had issues with Sainsbury’s Avios points being removed with no explanation? I had a 1400 Avios point credit Avios in Jan and a 1400 point removal in April. I found out via an email from Avios saying that Sainsbury’s had informed them that “your purchase no longer qualifies”. Sainsbury’s tried to put us to Nectar (who weren’t even involved) who punted us back to Sainsbury’s.

    • Jacob says:

Yes, I had the exact same problem. 1800 Avios removed last week from a Sainsbury’s purchase back in November. Have you raised the issue with Avios or did you go straight to Sainsbury’s?

  • Paul says:

Happy Easter all. I’m probably being a bit dim here but am I correct in thinking that if I switch on auto-convert today I will only get the 25% bonus on tomorrow and next Monday’s 400 point auto conversion (given the offer ends on 30/4)? Any additional manual transfers will accrue the lower 15% bonus. Or does the 25% bonus continue beyond the 30/4 offer closure date? Thanks

  • newbie says:

Hi head for points team, this is a brilliant deal thank you.
You can convert 80k manually and 40k via autoconvert in same month, the caps are independent of each other. So max total 120k (just did this and v pleased I did!). Thanks again

  • Ian says:

I am always super-dubious about these bonus deals. I have converted nectar to avios 3 times during a bonus deal period and never had the bonus allocated. The last time I wrote I was asked to provide them the details of the offer because they do not have access. By the time they wrote the deal had finished so I could not take the info from the BA website, but fortunately I could still access the details from the HFP page!!! I was retroactively given a bonus approximately equivalent to what I should have earned, but as a goodwill gesture.

This time I have made the conversion, again not been credited with the bonus, but have carefully kept the information proving the details of the offer. I have forwarded all this to BA and await a reply. ..
