Use your American Express Platinum Dining credit for an Ivy gift card

A valuable benefit that comes with The Platinum Card from American Express is £400 of annual dining credit. It makes a big dint in the annual membership fee.

Every six months – so it resets on 1st July – you receive:

  • £100 to spend in 160+ UK restaurants
  • £100 to spend in 1,600+ international restaurants

You can spend the money over multiple visits to multiple restaurants if you wish. It doesn’t need to be spent in one go.

One of the most common questions asked in our forum is whether the £100 UK Platinum Dining credit can be used for a restaurant gift card. This is a handy way of using your credit if you don’t think you can make it to a participating restaurant before 30th June or 31st December, depending on the time of year.

If you mean ‘a restaurant gift card’ you can order online then the answer is No.

However, if you want to use your £100 of UK Platinum Dining credit for a meal to enjoy later, the most popular option is a gift card for ‘The Ivy’ group of restaurants.

You must buy ‘The Ivy’ gift cards in person to trigger the £100 Platinum dining credit. Do not buy them online because the dining credit won’t trigger.

You can learn more on the gift card website here but remember – to get the £100 Platinum Dining credit to pay out, you must buy it in a participating branch of ‘The Ivy’. Not all branches are participating.

PS. Remember that reader Tim has created an interactive map of restaurants globally where the Amex Platinum Dining credit can be used. Check it out here.

I’m not sure there is an Ivy in Newcastle upon Tyne

    • Mr Phil says:

There is a Gaucho in Newcastle which is on the Amex listing. There isn’t an Ivy in Newcastle to my knowledge.

      • budva says:

True. There is also a venue in somewhere called “Warickshire” listed on the amex dining website but I am not sure where that is

    • Doommonger says:

      No but loads of Greggs.

  • Greg says:

Fantastic article Rob, but I can’t imagine not using one in 6 months. My next one will be gone first week in July.

(unless of course you are planning a £300 party in 18 months time)

    • The real Swiss Tony says:

The problem I find is that the overseas ones are now difficult to spend. I’ve been away maybe 5 times in H1 but never to a location where there is a participating restaurant. And I can’t believe I’m alone in that situation.

Presumably that was part of the decision. AMEX increase the benefit by 33% but know that a higher proportion will go unused.

      • meta says:

I have a problem with domestic credits now being £100 every six months is effectively just a discount. I also have a problem with list, but that is down to personal preference and lifestyle choices.

There are only two restaurants on the list where I’d be fine with eating. The majority of the rest serve mediocre to terrible food. I keep asking my partner to cancel the card, but each time they keep offering points so he ends up not cancelling.

      • Greg says:

Apologies Real Swiss.. I meant the UK one.

I find the overseas ones as difficult as you to spend.

  • HotinNewcastle says:

    Data points if helpful….
    1) opheem (Birmingham) and Benares (London) said they do not sell gift cards in person at the restaurant, found a bit disappointing!
    2) same for gaucho in Newcastle
    3) tattu (Birmingham) do sell gift cards in person so will try there if I can spend the credit or bb ricard

    • Michael Gell says:

I’ve bought Gaucho gift cards at Newcastle the last few dining credits and will be going again next week to buy another.

      • HotinNewcastle says:

That’s what they said on the phone to me, but that’s helpful to know. I will do the same. Thanks

    • SM says:

Simpsons in Birmingham sell gift card in the restaurant, planning to pick one up this weekend.

  • Tobeman says:

Popped into Ivy Asia and Ivy City Garden today and both told me there were problems issuing gift cards in the restaurants at the moment, and would have to use online Are there any others that offer gift vouchers that work too?

    • pauldb says:

Maybe worth trying Yauatchu. They might do vouchers that cover Hakkasan too.
Likewise Bread Street might do Gordon Ramsay-wide vouchers.

  • Barry W says:

Been to 2 Ivy restaurants today who have said ‘their system is down’ for gift cards!! However they can take payments for dining in……

  • Gtthree says:

I use the credits in tattu. Stacked a giftcard from Dec 2024 then used the Jan to June 2025 credit. Didn’t cover all the bill.

It’s a perk but in reality a discounted meal.

I take the card for USA car hire insurance and travel insurance for long haul holidays.

Harvey Nicks credit was good for a bottle of gin and some small items. Shame it’s being phased out.

  • Kirsty says:

When it states you have to buy the gift card in person, can that be achieved by phoning the Ivy and completing the transaction that way?

  • Rossy says:

Just been into the Ivy City Garden only to be told that they can’t issue gift cards at the moment as it’s broken. I was rushing for my train so didn’t have time to argue it. Very frustrating as I won’t be nearby any others before the end of the month.
