Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club Can you pay for an airport upgrade on a 2-4-1 redemption ticket?

Hi all, new to this so trying to work it all out. Looking to get the BAPP Amex card with a view to using the 2-4-1 voucher for a trip to Orlando. As I doubt I will spend enough for the 100000 points needed for a premium seat, are you able to get the 2-4-1 in economy and then pay to upgrade to premium?
Also if I delay by a year and build up 2 vouchers can I travel as a party of 3? Although as the 3rd seat is a child I’m assuming I would be better to pay and use the points to upgrade?.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

The only upgrade available would be for cash at the airport, and that’s not guaranteed to be available and/or good value.

I’d keep saving. A second companion voucher is good for a party of four (you pay double Avios). A single companion voucher is good for a party of three (you pay double Avios).

Consider TPA as well, availability can be better. ALso bear in mind that on many dates only 2 PE avios seats are released if you decide to aim for that.

I don’t think you can use two 2 for 1 for 3 people. If you go to a lot of places that Virgin serves their vouchers might be better for your family of three. As you can use (assuming no status) one voucher as a 2 for 1.5 and another voucher for upgrading a single person.

Or I think you can use an Amex BAPP 2 for 1 for you and your kid and maybe your partner can get a Barclays upgrade voucher via getting premium account.

As you have a partner, you should read the article “How you can earn 186,875 avios from amex sign up bonus’.

Three people is tricky unless the child is under 2 years. You are basically stuck paying full whack for the 3rd person. You might as well do what we did and have a 2nd child, because you can use another 2-4-1 and they can then fly free 🙂

Exactly why I said to my wife we had to stop at 2! A third child would just make finding reward seats almost impossible!

Think I’ll stick at 1 and lay the full price as it’ll be cheaper in the long run.

Thanks for the help on this one. I may just revert to plan B, which is to go to another destination instead (Menorca) which is more achievable in year for points.
