I booked a holiday for 4 people with Easyjet using my Amex Gold. That card was upgraded to Platinum a couple of months ago so I have Platinum insurance cover. I have never claimed anything from Amex re travel or health insurance so would appreciate some advise before I call them re dos and don’ts.
Our holiday is in less than 3 days. About 3 weeks ago one family member (one of the passengers) had unexplained pain and had to go to A&E 3-4 times. Tests and scans were done but nothing was found. A referral was sent for further scans but in the meantime the family member was advised to manage with painkillers.
The pain still comes and goes so we are thinking of just cancelling but want to know our position. Is this kind of scenario covered by Amex. I don’t think we will have any luck with Easyjet.
Any helpful advice would be appreciated.
Probably the best thing would be to call the insurance company and enquire, but at the very least they’re going to want a doctor’s letter confirming that the unwell person is unfit to travel. Also which relative it is will matter – insurance often only covers immediate family, and the sick person would have to be a “close family member” to cover the rest of the party.
Hope they feel better soon and it turns out to be nothing serious. A few years ago I was in a similar position – having lots of tests and scans but no diagnosis. We were booked to go to France for half term week and I was actually waiting for CT scan results at the time. We decided to go anyway, though I didn’t have any symptoms apart from extreme anxiety, as the consultant said nothing would be lost by travelling. Your relative might be able to make a case for the pain being too disruptive to travel, which their doctor may provide a letter for.
I can’t help with Amex rules – does the Platinum cover cases where you didn’t hold that specific card when you booked the trip?
Best advice above, contact Amex and double check the details, don’t rely totally on advice from strangers on here for something this important.
However be aware that even though you may have booked the trip for everyone and paid via Amex, they are unlikely to be covered. Only you and your partner (plus any children u25) are covered. So if you are able to claim on insurance you would likely only get a pro-rated refund for those covered. The others would be expected to claim on their own travel insurance. It’s not clear from your post whether the expectation is to claim the full cost for everyone.
Thank you, very useful. Yes, the family is us as a couple and two children under 25. My query was about claiming for all of us not going as we wouldn’t leave one ill family member behind.
Thanks again for the useful advise ahead of me calling. I appreciate Amex Insurance are the people to speak to, but wanted to check other people’s experiences when claiming.
Hi – my understanding is that claiming in your circumstances is fine but will depend on the exact condition of the person you are cancelling for. Being not inclined to fly just in case is unlikely to be enough. If you have time it may be worth seeing if you can get a doctor to declare them unfit to fly – this will give you a strong case.
