Hello all,
Next winter I’m planning to spend some time in Mexico & southern California followed by some time in Asia. Ideally I’d like to avoid backtracking through Europe (I’m London based) and ideally, I’d like to use my BAPP 241 voucher on this trip.
I’ve not been able to find anything on BA’s site regarding the limitations of the Open Jaw options, but I understand that the open leg needs to be the shortest of the 3 legs, which makes sense. I’m considering LHR-LAX / HND-LHR. According to the great-circle mapper the first leg is 5456 miles, and the open section is 5487 miles, which would rule it out by a little bit. (LAX-NRT is 5451, which would rule it in, just, but BA seem to fly from HND)
Can anyone tell me where I might find a definitive list of distances that BA use to decide eligibility considering that they don’t fly the open segment?
Alternatively if anyone has any good suggestions for an effective use of the voucher when visiting these regions, then I’d love to hear it. My backup plan would be to use the voucher for an OJ return to MEX / LAX, then buy another return flight from London to Asia for cash. More flying than I want, and more money too.
Thanks,
Tim
@TravelTim – when the mileage is as close as this, a small adjustment will probably make it work. Try eg another gateway in California like SFO. BA uses the IATA mileages and they would usually, for open jaw purposes, work with cities rather than airports.
Basically it will depend on the ticketing agent that picks up your booking; some make an issue of open jaws over different regions and there is potentially an issue here about the direction of travel.
ahh thanks JDB – good advice.
The inbound leg from Tokyo is already an “adjustment” to fit the criteria, since I’d rather be returning from HKG, but that will not work.
Of course, it’s a fine balance between utilising the voucher effectively and wasting extra time and money to make it work at all.
Presumably if I conclude that the adjustments are not justifiable I can always use the voucher for one leg only, right? Seems a pity, but it might be the best option.

Yes, you can use it one way if you can fit it to your transpacific plans, but you could also book a return from LA or another US gateway up to 12 months after the outbound. You could change the date (still within the 12 months limit and subject to Avios availability) but not the gateway.
