Spent like others too much time searching for flights for family holidays given the 350k to USA one way in UC new normal !
Looking at PE and UC redemptions Be aware when you go into book the flight you found THEY MAY NOT BE THERE but they are if you book them as single leg journeys – I have no idea why but this happened to me – I managed to find UC for 29 000 and 110,000 return to LHR this summer – the ONLY way they came up at BOOKING TIME was to cross fingers and book individually
They all went through okay Phew ! But a tip /heads up for those that may not know and get a fright having bought top up miles too like I did just before booking Hope it helps for those that did not know this – another little quirk of airline systems VERY ODD !
The taxes on the US to LHR were less as is dollars vv pounds but you pay a transaction fee dependent on what card you use – I personally dont mind paying it as I get BA Avios ! and more protection from Amex should I change etc
ps Same applies for PE and ED fares !
Tha challenge has been finding return flights. You did well getting the returns
Some people have reported returns being priced differently to two one ways now. Goodness knows what’s going on, hopefully teething issues with the pricing system. But for now I guess we have to look for returns and one-ways 🙄
If pricing of reward tickets “reflect demand” then why the massive difference between directions? or are there hundreds of one way bookings? how are thse people getting the other way ?
Of course Occam suggests its just a scam by Virgin to lift the cost of reward flights even further

No scam. Has always been more demand for Upper flying East. Makes sense; for many people (including me) Premium is a perfectly satisfactory seat to travel in during daytime when just sitting reading a book or tablet, while lie-flat comes into its own if trying to sleep.
I’m currently mulling a trip for next year where I want to use a Barclays upgrade voucher AND a Virgin cc voucher. Problem is, Barclays can only be used ex-UK, and VS redemptions are very expensive coming home! Hopefully I will find a solution if I think long and hard enough …

Have you never priced one way cash tickets before?
There can be multiple factors. Code sharing, alliances, connections that are good in one direction but don’t in the other, different school holiday patterns etc.
