Hi, I have a booking at doubletree liverpool for the 11th May but now I’ve decided not to go because getting back the next day will be a nightmare with no trains running. Sadly the booking was non refundable, I’ve tried ringing the hotel and hilton, is there any avenue for getting it cancelled ? Thanks
It’s up to the hotels discretion but many times they are quite flexible. If you have loyalty it usually sways them to help aswell but there is no requirement for them to do so. Might be worth to call the hotel and speak to someone at the front desk and explain the circumstances.
I’ve never had a problem getting a non-refundable booking *moved*, I always think they are more likely to change the date than just refund you. Could you re-schedule your trip – there’s absolutely loads to do in Liverpool and it was looking quite fabulous when we visited a few weeks ago due to all the Eurovision sprucing-up?!

Do they change the rates? Many times I’ve cancelled a booking before it becomes non refundable as I’m not sure but the rate was a bargain and I was very reluctant to! Just couldn’t make the date and didn’t think they would just change the date. For another date with a higher price, it wasn’t as worth it!
Usually not, though I can’t say for sure that the price was more expensive on the new night. Once there was an extra £20 charge but that seemed to be down to a quirk that happens if you change payment cards at check in. I didn’t quibble it though as it was a cheap stay anyway, they were incredibly accommodating and we ended up with 4 drinks vouchers.
It’s always worth asking though. You might wish to double check the no show policy. As per below from Hilton Honors Ts & Cs, they could potentially charge you the full cash price for that night which given Eurovision is on could be nosebleedingly expensive. From the hotel’s perspective they will be getting paid a lot of money by Hilton for your reservation which they might struggle to replace at the last minute. Tread carefully!
“All Reward Stay reservations must be guaranteed with a credit card. No additional deposits are required for Reward Stay reservations prior to arrival. No-shows or cancellations of Reward Stay reservations outside of the timeframe set by the hotel’s individual cancellation policy will be charged the cancellation or no-show fee set forth by the hotel or one night’s room and tax at the hotel’s Best Available Rate for that date if no cancellation or no-show fee is specified. ”
Are they striking during Eurovision?! That is sinking pretty low. It doesn’t really register with me as the trains here are so appalling it’s difficult to tell whether there’s a strike or it’s just normal service.

Yes. Low life scumbags!
Seriously, they are a joke! They are offering “travel advice for those attending Eurovision”, but this turns out to be a choice of getting a refund or using your ticket on a different day …
So much for solidarity with Ukraine!
I had a tier points run last year which fell at the first hurdle when BA cancelled the first flight on my trip less than 2 hours before departure. Gnashing of teeth as three stope prepaid but polite calls got all three moved at same rate for the trip to be repeated this year and full refund from BA within 10 days. So yes ask and I’m sure that they will be helpful

And scheduled a strike for cup final day when 60,000 people need to get from manchester to wembley… well maybe 40,00 if you take off the london reds.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, it didn’t even occur to me to ask for the date to be moved, I’ve never visited before so I think i’ll try that. It was a points booking. Hoping the strikes get called off ! I’m actually going on a date when there’s no strikes but the day after there’s strikes so it would be impossible to get back. (12th may)
Even if there were no strikes, the train service would be inadequate to get people home or to their not-so-nearby airbnbs after the Eurovision events.
Slightly odd that providing adequate public transport isn’t a requirement for a city to host Eurovision.
I thought points bookings were flexible! yikes, you learn something new every day!
Typically where there is a big event on, points rates will be non-refundable.
The reason for this is that the hotel expects to sell out so does not wish to suffer the lost revenue from a bunch of speculative points bookings which could be cancelled at the last minute.
Normally, a hotel gets reimbursed for a points booking with a very nominal sum. But when hotel occupancy is something like 95%+ the hotel gets reimbursed close to the average rate they achieve that night hence the likely difficulty in cancelling.
It’s another potential banana skin!
Update they’ve refused to make any change whatsoever to the booking which I think is outrageous imo, I don’t see how it would harm them to move the date ahead.

Outrageous? You booked non-refundable to save money, and now the hotel are enforcing the terms. Why would anyone pay more for flex if hotels flexed non-refundable bookings?

It was a points booking, it’s not like a cash booking where there’s multiple rates. Secondly it’s doesn’t benefit the hotel or me because they now have an unused room they could have sold and they miss out on the money I would have spent in the hotel.
Somehow given its Eurovision I don’t think they’ll be dwelling too much on what would have been your small contribution via a one nights stay to their bottom line they have now lost!
I’m not sure if it is just for cash bookings, but all non-refundable rates are refundable if you book another Hilton group hotel anywhere in the world at the same time when you cancel. It has to be done over the phone. I think there was recently an article about it on HfP.

Bookings originally at a USA and Caribbean Hilton only iirc.

I agree, it’s not outrageous to ask you to honour the t&c of a booking you made. Yes it’s on points but, as had been pointed out here, sometimes they are non-refundable. It’s bad luck, but not the hotel’s fault.
Think of it another way. If it were refundable up to an hour before check-in you’d expect them to honour it, even though at that late time the chance they could rebook would be minimal and they’d suffer a loss. Why do you find it outrageous for them to expect you to follow the booking terms when it turns out to be to your loss?

That’s partly my point ! They could have sold the room for whatever the full price atm is but instead they have to keep it off sale because I can’t move my booking

A construct entirely around you losing a non-refundable booking, because you’re entirely invested in what suits you now, rather than the T&Cs you booked under.
The time to have cared was when you made the booking. The whole point of flexibility is to deal with the unforeseen. If you accept more onerous terms you lose that flexibility, it’s how pretty much everything works.
