This morning I finished our booking for Japan next year. I want to share the details as I think it’s very cost effective way to get to Tokyo, which is always in demand. The yen is still weak against the pound too..for now. Here’s my itinerary. All flights Business Class, for two of us:
LHR > TYO: 100,000 Avios + £550, using Barclays Upgrade Voucher. Couple of weeks in Japan then:
TYO (Haneda) > Hong Kong (on JAL): 34,000 Avios + £393. Few days in HK then:
Hong Kong > LHR (night flight): 100,000 Avios + £71, using first leg of BA Companion Voucher
Total cost for the 3 flights: 234,000 Avios + £1,014, and I still have the return leg of the companion voucher to use. Fingers crossed at least one of the BA flights will have the Club Suite by then, but at least JAL Business Class will be enjoyable.
I’m in the planning phase and would like to thank you for posting this example. I’ve not got a BAPP card because I disliked the CW seat plan but now that I saw the Suites, I’m definitely considering the BAPP.
I’ve got 200K Avios and was planning on booking two single business class tickets with Qatar Airways for 160K Avios + about £750 to Japan, and then booking the return flight with cash. This seems to make little sense as the Economy and Premium Economy flight tickets back to LHR with BA or JAL are like £1200-1300 each, but a return ticket (LHR > HND > LHR) in Premium Economy comes to £2100 or so each. I’m now pondering on just booking two Premium Economy tickets with cash due to this and bank the Avios for USA trips.
I wasn’t sure on whether it would make much sense to visit neighbouring countries and then booking a return flight from there, so might do something similar to what you’ve done.
Love the route – but you have to book 241 return before flying outbound, right?

That’s right, so I’ll book the 241 return (LHR > TYO or HKG) for Dec 2025 or early Jan 2026 when the seats become available, prior to flying the outbound at end-Jan 2025. But as I tend to generate more vouchers than I really need I might just use the outbound leg and forget about the return.
The other good thing about doing it this way is there’s no need to call BA at any time (especially midnight).
@Roker, I do similar (EDI-HND, Japan-BKK, HKG-EDI) but just be mindful that your retunn UK-HND/HKG availability is not a certainty. Just tripped on this last month when I couldn’t get suitabke dates for return before my outward flight from HKG. Not an issue if you have plenty of vouchers though and are happy to burn on one-ways.
