I’m thinking of cancelling my BA card as I’m not using it. This way the clock for the 24 months can reset as well.
I might want to reapply for a BA card sooner though, for example in order to earn a companion voucher.
How long would I have to wait before re-applying? Are there any rules?
If you don’t care about the sign up bonus, there are no published rules. Internally, however, Amex may not immediately mark your account as closed, which means you can’t open the same account type again. I think it’s a matter of months, but not years, before the systems eventually allow you to reapply. Given it’s not a published rule it may not be consistent across all customers either.
When I signed up for the BAPP card, and within minutes was emailed a better offer from BA, I called them to suggest cancelling (within 14 day cooling off period), and then reapplying, they said the system would prevent a reapplication for the same card until 90 days had passed. By that stage, the improved signup offer from BA would have expired, so I didn’t bother.
Sorry to dig this up, but what is Amex’ time frame between cancelling a (BAPP) card and being eligible again for the sign up bonus in the future?
