On the outbound route we were offered sparkling wine as a welcome drink in premium economy. On the inbound, we were offered water or juice.
I asked the cabin crew why there was not sparkling wine. She said that due to local customs laws, the crew were not allowed to open alcohol on the ground. Strange I thought, but fair enough.
Then I look down the aisle into business and they were being offered glasses of champagne!
BA may have been willing to pay the duty on J tickets but not on W tickets
Ask cabin crew (off the record) and they’ll tell you the problem with PE is some passengers think they’ve bought business class without the flat bed, when to the airline they’ve bought economy with an couple of inches extra space and a china bowl for their meal. Expectations should be at accordingly.
Frustrating to see others get what you were hoping for though, I can empathise with that. I’m pretty sure I had a similar experience leaving India in WTP a few years back, although at 6am local I didn’t really want the alcohol anyway!
Also worth noting that BA doesn’t seem to promise bubbles on the ground for WTP (only after take off) and reviews also talk about WTP only being offered soft drinks on boarding, such as here leaving Austin, TX: https://www.google.com/amp/s/wanderupfront.com/ba-world-traveller-plus-austin-to-london/amp/
Flying WTP for work it seems as likely to be whim of crew as much as anything. I’ve seen it be different in the same route.
From what I overheard from the crew when someone raised this on a JFK-London flight I was on the loading of the duty paid “bubbles” for WTP is very inconsistent. They would not be allowed to open the sealed bars due to customs and based on the pours you get in CW I don’t think there would be spare from there to share!
There are some issues in certain US states I Think like TX and other locations, but that does impact CW as well
We have had similar in CW. No champagne on the ground with the same excuse but could see it being served in 1st Class!
Had bubbles in both F and J flying out of the USA – it is duty paid stuff (so they load the bare minimum) and even in F it was pretty poor. Refused a second glass hinting I’d wait for the LPGS – which turned up as soon as was humanly possible after take-off. They ran out of the duty-paid stuff well before we closed the doors.
The OP didn’t miss much 😉
It’s a ruse to avoid serving you. I had this in Nairobi club world to Heathrow. There are other little stories they come up with as well. It’s the demoralised cabin crew trying to get an easier life. Usually then they will hide away after take off. It’s a BA thing!

Curious to know why BA Cabin crew are demoralised? Are their wide spread frustrations they have that management aren’t addressing as it seems to be just more than one bad apple or one bad set of cabin crew having a bad day? What are the fundamental issues crew are having?

Not from my experience! I know from the USA they load as little as possible as it has to be duty-paid. In other countries where they have laws on alcohol consumption they can’t serve it on the ground/whilst in airspace. Champagne before take-off is like a dummy/pacifier to a passenger – it keeps them quiet for a few minutes 😜
