Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club Novice with Avios & BA – Help plz

Hi guys, hopefully you lovely people can help me with a few issues i seem to have with this avios / rewards set up.

    1) Have my own amex but i stupidly attached my dads exec number to the card so now it seems i have 0 avios but it all goes to my dads exec a/c – do i need to contact amex to change it to my own exec number

    2) I made a Household A/C with my dads exec number as the main 1 but now i need to change it to myself as the main holder and then can add dad and the mrs (all have their own number) – best way to do this? I seem to remember that when i set it up i couldnt make any changes for a set amount of time

    3) Mrs made her exec club number and ac before we got married. Now her surname and that are different does she have to change this in her own avios or ba exec ac?? – E.G was booking a secret flight or her bday so had to add her as new passenger as couldnt change the name on already names passengers

    4) What is the best place – area or type of ticket to use a lovely comnpanion voucher on – Is using it in europe even worth it?
E.G for LHR to Rome it was:

Use 1 companion voucher, 23500 points plus £2.00

Was that worth it? when on BA Hotline the same tickets are £219 with no avios or a little discount with some avios used

    5) Mrs booked 2 tickets for her mum and dad to travel on BA hotline using her exec club number and paid for using her amex which does show BA spend etc. As she DID NOT travel is she eligible for anything such as Tier points etc.. and what is the difference on amex between Ba spend and non Ba spend do you get more points or something

Now that i have found this lovely forum i will definetly have more questions as and when. More so because there is not a lot of help out there on how to navigate all these different things

I’m struggling to post a response, might have too many links so I’ll try and split them up.

There is plenty of help on this site – start with Rob’s excellent articles then move on to the relevant threads.

Wow you have a lot of questions.
You can have your dad in household account alongside yourself and use his Avios.
241 are best used on long haul.
Do not part pay with cash.
Your Mrs will not get tier pts. She will get 3 PTS per £ for spend though using her BA plus card.
    Read NL’s nice links above.

@zapato, OP is also asking this on another thread!

I think the general consensus of opinion on here is that it is a bit of a waste using a 2 4 1 on a short haul economy flight. Most seem to go for long haul in business class, however it is very much a personal choice, especially if you are getting toward the expiry date of your 2 4 1, as you would be getting something as opposed to nothing if you let it expire.

honestly its just good to find a forum that knows about these things, as BA are not the most helpfull people with the different queries we have.

    When you say:

Do not part pay with cash. – Too late, as already have done for Rome trip, should i have used 0 avios as its short haul or most avious and just £2.00 balance??

Your Mrs will not get tier pts. She will get 3 PTS per £ for spend though using her BA plus card. – Agree and understood from the other thread. Not sure on the 3 points per £, is that for the normal Amex BA card (blue type)

Thanks for the links, have been going through them

Yes as we learned last year when we used 241 for trip to dominican., but as we only have the basic BA Amex, might need to get the higher 1 to use 241 for business flights etc..

The Blue Amex gives you 1 avios per £1 spent. The more expensive one gives you 3 avios when you spend on flights/holidays on BA.com.

You can use your avios in 2 ways:

    – Buy an Avios (reward) ticket. THis is the £2 cash / many avios scenario you mention. A reward ticket does NOT give you AVIOS or TPs

    – Use avios to reduce the cash portion of a normal ticket (say it is £100 you are given the option to pay £50 and 5000 avios). In most cases this is the WORST use of avios one can do and you cannot cancel your ticket (it is like a normal cash ticket).

I know, lol only because some info is not easily available and what some people from BA might tell us is not true as they dont know themselves etc.

    1) Do not part pay with cash. – is this on either short or long either way?

I just booked to go rome, via BA hotline (as you get 23kg checked baggage for same price as normal economy tick) the price was £219.28, with using 12900 avios (got £78 off and paid £143.18). I also have a 241 but didnt use it as was a waste for this flight

    2) Your Mrs will not get tier pts. She will get 3 PTS per £ for spend though using her BA plus card. – Is this for when she bought the BA flight tickets with her Amex?. I think the tickets cost £1196 and that is how many points she got

What about me with my Ba booking yesterday, spent £143 on BA site using my BA Amex. will it be 3 points per £?

Sorry for all the questions guys just trying to get the most out of these cards etc..

    1) The generally accepted ‘Rule of Avios’ is that getting less than 1p per Avios value is poor use of Avios. You spent 12900 Avios for £76.10 ‘value’. At 1p per Avios your Avios are ‘worth’ £129. That’s the reason for not using part pay. However, for some people, they’d be fine with what you got. I generally get 1.5 to 2.0p value per Avios through using 241s.

    3) Either of you using a BA card will get 3 Avios per £1 spent with BA.
