    Hi all,

Last night (Sunday 9th March) I was due to fly from NCL to BRS with EasyJet. The aircraft we were due to fly on had previously flown up from BRS and was showing with a delay of around 20 mins. Upon nearing NCL, the plane circled a bit (not unusual, I thought) and then looked like it was coming in for landing until the flight tracker showed it suddenly gaining altitude and it turned back to BRS. It turns out the level of fog surrounding the airport was unsafe to land or take-off in.

EasyJet rescheduled the flight to this morning with a departure time over 12 hours later. I was staying with my partner so I just went back to his place and did not need to claim a hotel for the night, but I did have to pay for an additional Metro ticket and buy breakfast this morning, which I will try to claim back.

EasyJet’s reason for rescheduling is that there were “adverse weather conditions in Newcastle, which are below safe operating limits. The disruption to your flight is outside of our control and is considered to be an extraordinary circumstance.”

Am I likely to get anywhere with UK/EU 261? It seems EasyJet are already telling me this is a no go. (I did think though that runways these days could guide planes in with little to no visibility so I was surprised that fog would have such an impact.)

@bennymoon – you can claim for your breakfast and additional transportation costs from/to the airport but the fog would seem to be a fairly conclusive get out for easyJet. I’m quite sure easyJet would have landed if it were at all possible; the airline has incurred rather greater costs than your breakfast/metro ticket in diverting the flight back to its origin. Even with ILS, there are minimum real visibility thresholds.

Claim the metro ticket and the breakfast.

You won’t get anywhere with a compensation claim.

Thanks both, I have just done exactly as you said and submitted for breakfast and the metro ticket.
