Forums Payment cards American Express Platinum: [how to get the] hotel Gold statuses?

  • harley 109 posts

Just applied for the platinum card and is in the post, am wondering how the hotel status match works, i only have membership with IHG and not opened a hilton etc. Is it best to start opening these accounts now or is there an easier way to do it when the card has arrived?

It’s not a status match – you can register via the Platinum Amex and get gold status in some hotel schemes – definitely Hilton and Bonvoy, not sure about IHG. You do need to have an account open to be able to do this. Once you’ve set up your Amex account, there is a page to go to to activate the hotel statuses.

Just to clarify – you need to have the hotel membership accounts already open, you can’t do that via the Platinum!

You don’t need to wait for the card to arrive, you just need your Amex login details. The requesting of the hotel (and car hire) statuses is all done online on the Amex website. Once you’re logged in you want the “Benefits and Help” menu, then under that “Platinum Benefits” then “Travel” then “Hotels & Lodging”

Amex is able to open hotel accounts for you but I don’t recommend it. Open them yourself so you have a record of the details and password.

You then use the online Amex form to do the upgrade.

The Amex Platinum card will give you gold status with Hilton, Marriott Bonvoy, Melia and Radisson (and also status with Avis and Hertz). Accor and IHG are the main hotel chains which don’t have the Plat tie-up.

When looking to leverage the Plat benefits in hotels also remember the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts programme. You get special benefits like a guaranteed 4pm check-out time and $100 hotel credit (both of which can clearly add value, particularly on a short stay).
