I’ve just been on the chat for player 2 Plat, as the renewal anniversary is due in a few weeks. Explained we were considering closing her card, as I am now eligible to apply again after 2 years, for the 40,000 SUB, with what now seems a tough spend target. Asked about retention offer and they immediately offered 35000 with no target, so I jumped at that. We might struggle to make the 6K spend target in 3 months if I was to apply again.
I’m keen to ask how ruthless the rest of you are. Would some of you take the 35K, then refer me, apply and aim to get the 40K SUB, and close player 2 account anyway ? I am not that ruthless.
Today marks a year and a day since my last retention bonus (saved in the calendar!) and I was offered 35k.
I said I’d think about it. My membership renews in April, so I’m torn between accepting 35k and restarting the clock, or waiting until later in the year after more spend has gone through to see if a higher offer later becomes available.
What if they do away with retention bonuses in the meantime? They aren’t a published benefit
It’s bonkers but while you correctly state retentions aren’t a published benefit, they are a now a de facto benefit and have been for some years. You are right to question how they can continue but that’s the big mess they have created.
In view of the higher retention on Platinum vs the other big three, and the cash type benefits on offer, retentions have the effect of making the most expensive, flagship card actually the cheapest. That’s the weird wonderful world of Amex.
Just offered 35K via chat. 367 days since last retention offer (also 35K). Posted one comment saying that I felt I would not get good value from the card and offered the bonus immediately. Took less than 5 minutes!

Interesting how some are super strict about renewal dates, I for one get an offer on a precise date not before, while others seem to get them whenever!

Just tried after others reporting of their recent offers and have been given 35k MR. I pay monthly rather than annually so was happy to accept.
35k offered and accepted today. Not much goes through the card as usually use the BA cards with higher earning rate.
Took 30 seconds to get 35k, no questions asked. A year and a week since last offer. Put hardly anything through the card.

Initially offered downgrade to gold card, but when i declined, offered 35k points no strings attached. Looks like I’ll be keeping it for a little while longer.

Got 50k points on chat after some back and forth. They said they should post in 24-48 hours, so will update if they actually come through. Thanks to this thread for the information!

Due to an error recently when initially asking over the phone for a retention bonus, I have ended up with 62k points. First attempt led to the card being cancelled erroneously by a US based agent after telling them explicitly not to cancel the card on four occasions, which I spotted in time to have it reinstated and a complaint issued. This was supposed to take two weeks and a callback which failed to occur in the timescale advised, so when I phoned back the operative offered 12k points as a gesture of goodwill which I accepted.
At this point I was going on holiday for two weeks so I decided to call up yesterday and request a retention bonus which was offered instantly at 50k points by an operative in Brighton. I’m still waiting to see what happens with the benefits as they stand going into 2025 as I may end up downgrading to Gold if the benefits I value the most fall by the wayside. The travel insurance is now moot for both my partner and I as AXA have stated we no longer qualify due to pre-existing medical conditions, and the erosion of hotel benefits over the years plus the difficulty of using the PP in the UK are limiting the value of the card.

The annual 50k retention bonus really does make the card worthwhile.

2nd year in a row, and makes it absolutely worthwhile to keep the card considering the lounges and dining credit…..For now!
