In Feb, I posted how my family member met the 10K target when there was a big chunk of MR points handed out. They got 50kMR points once they mentioned about the prospect of cancelling.

At the weekend, I helped said family member ask for a retention offer before the yearly payment is due at beginning of Jan. They were offered another 30k points.

I’m no mathematician but with some offer the offers and perks of the card, this must be a better way than signing up for the BA subscription or the booster

50K MR points straight after direct question on the availability of retention offers in the chat (no lead-ins as to why I’m “cancelling”, suggestions to downgrade etc).
Had the card for 9 months, very modest spend as the most has gone to Gold and BAPP due to higher earning ratio.

My OH got given 35k after asking.

Just tried for a retention deal and got offered the measly 35k. I’ve managed 50k each renewal past few years so guess I can’t complain!

Though deals like the current 100k make me wonder if I should take 2yrs out, save £1300 then sign back up with a bonus deal. Hmmm…

First time I’ve tried the cancel / retention. Went on chat this morning and said I was considering leaving and quickly got offered 50k MR points. Had the card since 2018 and spent £8k on it last month.

Is this 2 retention bonus within the last 12 months? Is the hard rule of once every 12 months true?

Morning. Did I read some readers had been able to get Amex to apply the annual fee in monthly chunks rather than one lump sum? Thanks

@Gin123 it has often been reported that people get an additional 50k in their first year, often after a short period of time. It appears to be separate from the ongoing annual retention bonus that is offered.

    Yes you can pay monthly

65k points in June renewal was enough for me to stay a bit longer. It was my first attempt at getting a bonus after 10 years!… Stupid me.

I spend about £250-300k/year and thought this was pretty high but now I’m thinking it was perhaps just their first offer!

I don’t think it’s a negotiation – they offer whatever the computer says they can offer.

Quick update – can’t pay monthly if you’ve had a recent retention offer – live chat broke the bad news to me!

20 year member and offered nothing. 🙂

    Did you try again?

We’ve had the Plat charge card for over 20 years and never tried to get a retention offer?

That’s been reported for a long time now.

Have had the monthly deal for years and still got the retention.
I know it is not the same as reported above — just reporting as a datum point.

Do people generally move their membership reward points out of their account before asking about retention bonus and threatening to leave? I was planning to move my points out today in preparation for closing my account but after some research it looks like I missed a 30% bonus offer that ran earlier in the year transferring to Avios. Tempted to keep my account now in the hope this might be repeated sometime. If I do this am I right that currently you can still cancel and get a pro rata refund of annual fee?

Nothing offered on webchat, after having held card for 2 and a half years of spending ~25k a year on it. Feigned cold feet and will try again tomorrow, and will leave if they don’t offer something. Benefits are borderline for the current subscription fee and I’ve just had a poor experience with the insurance (something I assumed would be covered in a premium product was not).

No retention offer for me, despite asking on webchat.

Maybe they are pausing these. Thinking about it, I might be better off cancelling in Jan after the annual offers reset. So it’s better for them if I exit now

Chatted to Amex last week after a full year following the prior retention offer. Nothing offered – just monthly payments or downgrade. Will try again over the next couple of weeks and likely cancel the card if nothing is offered again. The retention points were the only thing making the card worthwhile for my use.

My only hope is that they consider this a cheap time to offload people and they’ll be back in the new year!

My annual fee posted today, and within 2 minutes on chat (after telling them that I have not managed to use the Global Dining credits in 2024, and the split between Jan-July will make it even harder to use the full amount next year), they offered 50k MR, which I duly accepted. The 50k posted within 10 minutes.

I upgraded the card last year from Gold, when they had the 75k plus 25k offer, and once I hit the £10k in about 4 months then, they gave me a 35k retention offer.

Probably put about £30k on the card in this year. It might have helped my case that the Platinum is currently my only Amex, as I cancelled my BAPP recently to reset the 2 year clock.

Will obviously keep the card this year, and now just waiting for the 25k MR in month 15 of having the card. I stupidly forgot to screenshot the offer, so hopefully no problems with those points.

Got 35k, same as last year, don’t use the card other than for the offers and insurance.
