Forums Hotel loyalty schemes Hilton Honors Re-sell room in full hotel

  • 87 posts

I have 3 separate Hilton points bookings next week for 3 nights at Doncaster races that is fully booked.
I don’t want to go but my room is not cancellable.
Any ideas; should I call hotel to try to get out of it or any ideas as to how I could re-sell the room?

It’s worth calling to ask. I managed to get a hilton non refundable stay refunded after the event I was attending was cancelled.

Check if you have travel insurance with Amex gold/platinum/curve (assume you may have if you are a hfp reader)
Since uk hotels dont check IDs you could list it online and check them in or get their name on the booking

I’ve found individual Hilton hotels extremely helpful when asking to move/cancel paid bookings, but I’m not sure how they’d be with 3 rooms. It’s worth contacting them in case they feel they could re-sell the rooms and might come to an agreement. I’m guessing you actually want your points back, and not a re-schedule, which might be more of a problem because it might have to be done via HH rather than the hotel itself.
I’m pretty sure re-selling the rooms yourself would be a breach of HH Ts & Cs and not allowed via online sites but there’s nothing to stop you coming to a discreet agreement with family or friends I suppose, as UK hotels don’t ask for ID at check in.

I have had success in doing this, again by contacting the hotel direct. You may however want to take a close look at the terms of your booking as I recall having a room booked on points at the Hampton in Newcastle. A no show was actually charged at the rack rate for the night. Not sure of the morality of that but it was in the small print!

The issue from the hotel’s point of view is if occupancy is high (I believe Hilton specify 96%) then Hilton corporate pay the hotel 90% of the average rate struck for that day. At least that’s what happens in my head although sometimes I struggle to tell the difference between reality and make-believe.

So if the hotel is sold out they will be getting very good revenues from your room courtesy of Hilton corporate and for them to allow a cancellation would mean forgoing that guaranteed revenue for the opportunity to try and do better at short notice.

Your best bet is probably to call and ask nicely. If your reason for not being able to go is sad, then share this with them. Quite often hotel employees can be quite kind.

That’s the case for most points bookings at least with IHG and Hilton anywhere. It happened to Rob and he wrote an article about it.

A few years ago I did very nicely indeed ‘selling back’ a certain suite booked for ludicrously cheap points over an August bank holiday. Just called and asked if we could do something that worked better for both of us.

Hadn’t appreciated that. Thought at worst you would forfeit the points. Seems like the hotel wins both ways if they get 90% or rack rate from corporate, you lose your points and you get hit for the BAR to????

Certainly never seen that on my bookings before / the Hampton was a first for me.
