Apologies, I’m just catching up with this thread.
I currently have the arcc which I am holding to protect a significant balance of reward points.
Is there any risk to this balance if I attempt to upgrade to platinum?
I was going to apply separately for the card as I want to utilise the benefits on some upcoming trips (I’m not eligible for any sign up bonuses) but definitely don’t want to risk wiping out my balance.
Would it also be possible to subsequently downgrade to the arcc and maintain the balance?
ThanksI’m in the same position as you. Recently took out the ARCC to protect my wad of points. Then cancelled my Platinum as I’m not expecting to make any trips right now and some benefits such as Priority Pass aren’t exactly usable right now.
The site indicates that I can upgrade my ARCC card (I haven’t even had the first bill yet), but I’m curious if I can downgrade the card in future. If I can downgrade to a Gold in future or an ARCC, that would be great.

They don’t usually allow downgrades. Just targeted upgrades
Just wanted to add my experience of upgrading. My Gold Rewards Card anniversary was in August, I was charged the annual fee on the 10th September and my 10k MP were added to my account on the 12th September.
Over the last few weeks, up until even two days ago the link never worked for me and when I called up (x3) I was told there was no upgrade offer available and I would need to apply as a new customer. I called Amex this morning to thank them for the 10k MP and said it was a shame I couldn’t upgrade so I’d like to cancel my card. The agent was a regular agent not from the retentions team or anything said that an upgrade was possible and she immediately processed it. The card was updated literally within a minute on the app and she said I qualified for the 40k bonus spend thing as well.
So long story short, if you want to upgrade to Platinum, ignore the link and just give Amex a call.

Interesting.
I’ve phoned Amex 5 times about this, including 3 people at Brighton, all of whom are currently unable to help.Just wanted to add my experience of upgrading. Thanks for sharing. Presumably you’ve had the Gold annual fee refunded (pro-rated)?

Yes, the refund will be processed on my next statement and the new fee will also be applied then as well.
Thank you for the comments regarding my query above.
@Rum i followed the link yesterday and successfully upgraded my ARCC card to Platinum. It went thru’ immediately and the new card was reflected in my acccount and my substantial pile of points were unaffected. I subsequently received an email confirming the upgrade. There is no sign of the Platinum offers nor mention of the 40k points bonus. My plan is to give it a couple of days and contact Amex via chat regarding the offers. I will make the £4k spend and then query the 40k points if they don’t appear. (as per @Carlos a few weeks ago)
Regarding the downgrade – if it isn’t possible I guess I will just apply for the ARCC again before cancelling the Platinum.Thank you for the comments regarding my query above.

Priority pass physical cards take about 20 days.
For those who upgraded from gold, annual fee refund is posted for same date, but takes a day or two to appear. Annual fee for Plat is charged 2 days later.
And for the nth time, there won’t be a tracker for 40k bonus. Just chat or call them after you hit the spend.

So it looks like ARCC -> Plat is an acceptable route. It has worked similarly to this when upgrading a Gold charge card to Platinum in the past.
Could you please keep us in the loop as to how things work out for you going forward? I’d expect you get the new card in the post sometime soon. The offers don’t appear automatically. Chat them on website after a few days and they’ll add everything for you.

From experience, I would say it’s definitely worth waiting a bit before calling CS or getting onto them via chat. Sometimes the offers do start to appear eventually. Once you get CS involved, things may get a little complicated.
Regarding the tracking of bonus points, I use a simple spreadsheet. Use the statement balance and be sure to subtract any charges before your upgrade date, the annual fee, etc. It might not be perfect, but you will be able to get a pretty good idea when you’ve hit the target.
Was about to apply for the Gold>Plat upgrade. Will be giving up on the 10k spend bonus points on Gold next month so want to make sure I get it right – I should be able to downgrade back to Gold if I want to early next year, say, right? I read through this thread but there appeared to be differing opinions on downgrading.
Interestingly, I tried the link again this morning and it is now telling me I’m eligible for the upgrade to Platinum from Gold.
Anniversary has recently passed and my 10k bonus points due in the next couple of weeks so will wait for those to land first (hopefully before the upgrade offer closes).Took out the credit card in order to upgrade, tried to upgrade was told not eligible. Is this targeted. Called Amex took an hour for them to say it’s not valid because I have had the Gold Credit Card for under a year. I said this doesn’t make sense as this an exclusive offer of 40,000 for the credit card which has been around for only a couple of months apparently she insisted its been around for years and I am not eligible. Anybody else had similar issues?

Going by the previous post by degsy, that seems to make sense to allow upgrades only for those who have held it for a year. Though I dont know if its part of the T&Cs.
Personally, I think its good they have this rule.@Rum i followed the link yesterday and successfully upgraded my ARCC card to Platinum. @Sprout, have you received your cards and started spending on them? Also any chance you spoken to Amex CS about the bonus points offer? Cheers in advance!@Rum, card was received about 3 days later. I went on chat the following day and they manually added the 3 additional offers. I spent the £4k over the following week and the additional 40k points are showing in my account today. I didn’t have to contact them to chase the points they were automatically showing.
Hope that helps. One question is relation. If I downgrade Plat to ARCC I will save my MR points but holding on to the ARCC does that affect the 24 month wait for another SUB?

I got told by Amex that our PRG cannot be upgraded because it has been held for under a year.
I asked them where in the t&cs does it state this, and they were unable to confirm.
However, I was given a decent amount of MR for having had to chase many times and being given different reasons for inability to upgrade the PRG.
@Sprout and @Carlos how long have you guys held your PRG cards prior to upgrading your ARCCs through that link?
Wondering if it is worth going through with this given the final response from Amex is that our PRG is ineligible (but the link will presumably upgrade the ARCC instead). One question is relation. Yes, your next SUB will be delayed by the time you hold the ARCC.

So, just to confirm, did you upgrade from ARCC to Platinum? And was that with or without having a PRG card?
I cancelled my Gold card around a year ago, so I don’t have one. However, I am seeing the upgrade offer on my account for my ARCC card even though I don’t have a Gold card whatsoever.
I’ve just called Amex, I wanted to use that strategy of “threatening” to cancel the card blah blah and I was told that possibly the offer is not available to me because I haven’t spent anything on the card in spite of having it for a month… I was told to start spending on it and check again in a week… any similar experience?
Ours went from PRG to Plat today. Have the green one also, so thought it might upgrade that instead, but didn’t. Showing as plat tonight.. unreal speed. Planning the foreign dining spend in Singapore in November, then next tranche in Phuket in Feb. Hopefully.

If you can see the offer, then it would appear your ARCC has been selected for upgrade.
Data point – I upgraded from ARCC to Platinum, no gold card.

Very interesting, thanks. Might have to give it a go in that case. I guess the worst that would happen would be that I spend a few months of fees for the rewards, but don’t get the main bonus.
