Forums Payment cards American Express Where and how does the pro rata refund get paid if you cancel Platinum?

Does it go back to the bank account that is set up for direct debits to Amex? Or do you get a cheque, or what?

It gets credited to your Amex account, so the best thing is to leave an outstanding balance of slightly more than the refund will be.

You can do what you want with it if you don’t leave a balance – transfer it to another Amex card you have, arrange for a bank transfer, whatever.

I had credit before after cancelling (or even having a large refund) and Amex made me do a few steps before they credited back to my bank account – I had to upload a recent statement showing Amex debits from my account before they processed it.

is it possible for you to confirm if one would still get a credit for an eligible promotion (such as dining credit) even after cancelling the card? I remember something about the t&cs of this on this forum, but it was 2 years ago so things might have changed!

I had multiple refunds during the pandemic and got fed up with the hassle of uploading bank statements! You can ask them to send you a cheque as well, which takes longer but then you can just scan that into your bank account if you use phone banking.
