Last chance to use 3V cards for Royal Mint coin purchases

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I ran a couple of articles recently (here and here) on buying coins from the Royal Mint at face value.

Whilst this sounds slightly crazy, it allows you to ‘manufacture’ credit card spending to meet a sign-up bonus target, or to use up a 3V Virtual Visa card.

The Royal Mint website has announced that June 30th will be the last day to order their Olympic coins.  The 50p and £5 coins – which are currently being sold at 50p and £5 each! – will then be withdrawn from sale.

I ordered some on the 7th May and am still waiting for delivery. I called this morning and the lady was very apologetic but said they have a large backlog (assume it’s mainly HFP readers :-)) and my order should arrive in 2 weeks.
Do note that they do not charge your card until they the order is ready for shipment so for those trying to meet a spend target this might be something to keep in mind.

I just went in to order and was limited to four of each coin. Total spend was £30. I did it for thefun of it but …………

  • Mitpat474 says:

just trying to get 4x£5 coins but they are showing as £25.02p, anybody else getting that now?

  • AviosNewbie says:

Looks like the number of 50p varieties have reduced now- I just ordered 50p X 20 coins and 5 pounds X 4 coins. So £30 in all.

But I was able to place another order by registering a different email address and a third order in the name of Mrs. AviosNewbie.

So I suppose you can actually order an unlimited number of coins, but it is a bit boring to update the basket for each 50p range. I have left it at an order of £90 in total – using my MBNA Amex, that’s 180 avios. 🙂

Anyone else finding the free postage code not working?

    • Rob says:

Definitely worked on Thursday when I wrote the post because I put an order through!

    • AviosNewbie says:

Worked for me at 09.00 pm last night

    • Sir Stamford says:

The delivery code is still working as of this morning. I have just purchased £11 worth of coins and managed to pay by AMEX too.
