Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Which hotel chains let you collect Avios points?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Back in June, I ran a long reference article entitled “Which Airlines Can I Use Avios Points On?“.  This was my attempt to cover all 33 airlines which let you use Avios points for their flights – not just BA partners, but also Iberia and avios.com partner airlines.

I thought it was worth doing something similar for hotels. (Car rental Avios earning is covered here.) Whilst British Airways has its own partner hotels, Iberia Plus has its own, different, list. And, with the number of different hotel groupings, it is not always easy to know if your hotel is part of a bigger grouping that lets you earn Avios points.

This post is my best attempt at listing every hotel chain that lets you collect Avios points. Please let me know of any errors or omissions in the comments at the bottom!

All earnings rates are for BA unless stated otherwise.  Where I mention an Iberia Plus earning rate, this is because BA does not support that hotel chain. Hilton is now the only chain where you earn more Avios in Iberia Plus than in British Airways Executive Club.

The only groups that allow you to collect directly into avios.com accounts are Marriott and Accor.

(3) – You must be a member of Marriott Rewards to earn Avios. You can set your account to have points directly deposited to BA after each stay.

(4) – Hotels in this grouping are all independently named but display this branding somewhere in their promotional material

(5) – You need to set your Hilton HHonors account ‘Points & Variable Miles’ to earn airline miles (you will also earn some Hilton points as well).  Note that if you credit to Virgin Atlantic instead of Avios you will earn twice the miles (2 per $1).

(6) – You must be a member of IHG Rewards Club to earn Avios

  • Mark Smith says:

Re note 5, I believe the Iberia rates are more generous, e.g. 750 Avios/stay on the fixed option.

  • signol says:

I’m still annoyed with Accor, as to earn points and credit stays you have to book direct. I usually have a few stays per month, but we have to book through the corporate travel agent, so nothing credits through Accor. Hilton credits fine though!

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

It’s worth asking your TA whether they can book directly. I’ve done this once or twice to pick up special promotions while keeping the travel policy bods happy.

      • signol says:

It’s actually a website we have to use – Expotel if you know it.

  • Scott says:

I’ve stayed at a few GHA properties (Kempinski, Doyle Collection brands) and have never ever received any of the published BA Gold benefits despite booking direct / presenting Gold card at checkin etc etc – quite disappointing – and as a result they’ve lost my custom!

  • Nick says:

Thanks, this is really helpful. I’ve got a 3-week trip to the US coming up and hadn’t realised I could collect Avios on my hotel stays! Two quick questions:

    1) I usually book hotels through Hotels.com. Does this affect my ability to earn Avios from my hotel stays?

    2) A really noddy question – you say BA only pays 500 avios for Hilton. I assume this is per stay, and not per night? My schedule keeps changing and because of the funny way that hotels.com seems to deal with booking changes, it has been much cheaper for me to bring forward bookings by cancelling the last night as originally booked and making a separate single-night booking for the new first night, than just changing the schedule using their tool. As a result I’ve got maybe 8 or 9 separate bookings for what in effect are 4 different short stays.

    • Nick says:

Great, thanks. I’ve set my HHonours to automatically convert to Fixed avios so hopefully when I show my card when checking in, I’ll still get the credit.

    • Rob says:

You are unlikely to get credit for hotels.com stays, unfortunately, although it never hurts to try. If you set your Hilton account to ‘points and VARIABLE miles’ you will earn Avios for incidental spend.

However, hotels.com has its excellent Welcome Rewards scheme for a free night for every 10 nights you book. This may be more generous than the Hilton scheme.

  • Phil Welch says:

One very important thing to mention about IHG is they have a far more generous Avios offering if you collect with Iberia rather than BA:

    1,800 Intercontinental
    1,500 Crowne Plaza
    1,500 Hotel Indigo
    1,000 Holiday Inn
    1,000 Staybridge Suites
    1,000 Candlewood Suites
    600 Holiday Inn Express

    • Scott says:

I think I’m sold on the need to get an Iberia account!

    • Rob says:

Thanks Phil. I never knew that …. Text amended.

    • Phil Welch says:

Happy to be the one offering help – it’s usually the other way round!

I’ve historically collected PCR points (using the various bonus codes) until reaching the Platinum threshold then switch to IB Avios. Occasionally switching to Avios throughout the year if staying at a Crowne Plaza or IC to gain better value if I knew I’d reach the threshold anyway.

The recent changes mean that I will never achieve status from stays alone so am now 100% IB Avios and will be getting the IHG credit card when my Platinum expires in January.
