Judging by a couple of emails I received on Monday, Tesco has brought back its occasional offer on HP printer ink cartridges.  This time, though, it is only available in-store – and that means, mainly, larger Tesco Extra stores.

The deal is simple.  You will receive 500 bonus Tesco Clubcard points when you buy two HP printer ink cartridges.  These seem to be around £8 at the moment.

HP 364

So, lets run some maths.

You buy 2 of the HP364 cartridges for £16

You earn 516 Clubcard points, which gets you 1,238 Avios

This works out at 1.29p per Avios

This is not the cheapest deal ever, of course.  However, you still have the cartridges!

Let’s assume that you manage to sell the HP364′s on ebay for £3.50 each, net of all costs, which is probably over-cautious.  Your total cost will have been £9 for 1,238 Avios, which takes you down to 0.73p each.

Note that these cartridges are quite fat and so postage costs are higher than usual, although if you do ‘buy it now’ and say you have six for sale, many customers will buy two or three at once.

Alternatively, you could send them to Tesco Recycling!  This is a lower return but is less hassle.  I believe that they accept new cartridges, and you will receive 50 Clubcard points on the HP364 cartridges as you can see from the list on their site.  That takes your total haul from the 2 cartridges to 616 points, or 1,478 Avios points for £16.  Not fantastic, but you don’t have the trouble of ebaying them and it is far cheaper than buying Avios from BA.

If you have a Tesco ‘conditional spend’ voucher (eg £5 off £50) then this deal becomes even more attractive.

I don’t know the closing date at present.  Note that most stores do NOT have the yellow labels on the shelf advertising this offer, although evidence so far shows that they go through the tills OK with the bonus points.

IT DIDN’T WORK IN Cambridge today – think its expired – will return on Friday 🙁

Seeing reports of this offer not working. Hopefully not too many being caught out. It is always taking a chance in going for an “offer” that isn’t displayed. How do you know your local store is taking part ? How do you know that the offer is over.? If you buy cartridges based on a non displayed anecdotal offer, and you don’t get the points, you have zero com back.

So a word of warning, on non displayed offers, do a minimum run first, for items you can use, ensure the points are on the receipt, and then go in deeper.

Not exactly zero come back. You get a refund.

Tesco runs a central system for everything except Express stores. They can do this because all the supermarket chains have done a deal with the Government to have level pricing nationwide (great news for Londoners, bad news for people in cheaper areas).

An offer at one store will be valid at all stores (except Express) and, as we have shown recently with prerelease video game deals, even if the item is not sold in a shop you can ‘buy’ it by typing the barcode into a selfserve till.

Promo material is now gone from my local Tesco, so assume that the deal has expired already.

Confirmed that this has stopped working in my local Extra store. Have done three runs over the last few days and today points not added at check out. Electrical desk confirmed it ended at midnight last night

I went into my local Extra (Gateshead) and there was still the promotion advertised on the shelves. The points were not added at check out so I went to customer services. They phoned clubcard customer services who told me (they let me speak to them) that they would be added in a couple of weeks.

Sounds like another Tesco fob off myself (reminds me of the Gillette promo last year) but I will persevere with this one. Anyone else get a similar response from Tesco?
