HfP reader wins one million Clubcard points!

I’m delighted to say that a Head for Points reader, who I won’t name, has won 1 million Tesco Clubcard points in a competition that American Express was running last autumn!  Well done.

He was (rightly or wrongly) considering taking the prize as 2.4 million Avios points.  However, as the small print of the competition did say at the time, the prize is NOT really 1 million Clubcard points.  Not really.

Technically, he is awarded 1 million points.  However, these can only be redeemed for purchases at Tesco.  They cannot be used for Clubcard Boost deals such as Avios or – my original suggestion – buying £30,000 of watches in Goldsmiths and selling them on!

These are the same rules that apply to Tesco’s Christmas Saver.  Tesco advertise it as giving you bonus Clubcard points, but in reality you can only spend these instore.

Luckily, Tesco has offered our winner £10,000 in £100 Tesco gift cards.  This is a good result, as – if he shops elsewhere – they can be sold on eBay easily in £100 or £200 chunks and he should end up with £8,000 in cash after all the fees.

We have had a few other Head for Points winners from competitions mentioned on the site recently.  One person won some Heathrow Rewards points via a Business Traveller competition I posted about, and someone else won a runner-up prize in the British Airways online Christmas game.  Your chances are generally pretty good in any competition I feature on here, since they are generally targeted at a very small niche.

I did fairly well out of Tesco MyKitchen, which Raffles featured here a few times. I ended up with £5 of clubcard vouchers, and a hamper of Sacla pesto!

  • John says:

Wonder if Tesco wrote T&Cs restricting selling, anyway selling £10000 of gift cards is a surefire way to get scammed and potentially banned for life from paypal and ebay… all it takes is 1 scammer, and if you don’t regularly sell £10000 of goods, you’ll probably get a nasty notice asking you to send them your business accounts and proof of source of goods

    Well done!

Haha, thanks 🙂 It’s a long running joke amongst our friends that my partner spends more time sleeping than a Koala Bear. Just won one (despite yesterday being official closing date) so it will make the perfect Valentines Day gift if it arrives on time.

  • Fred says:

Wow, amazing! Congratulations to the winner!

  • Will says:

I would just get a years shopping and 10k cc to boot

  • Joe says:

Surely there is a way refresh these into “proper” points? Even if it’s just buying 3v, combining them and paying them in to an account, or buying the £53.95 gift cards? I’d just do my shopping at Tesco (it’s free now!) and load the trolley with as many of the £53.95 VISA vouchers as I could find to boost the clubcard points total once recycled.

  • Malcolm says:

Now, the interesting question will be whether or not Tesco will apply the 30,000 point limit
