How to maximise the American Express ‘£10 for £20 Amazon spend’ offer

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

If you have a British Airways American Express card (or, looking at the comments, some other cards as well) you may have received an email from American Express yesterday offering you £10 cashback when you spend £20 at amazon.com.

If you did not receive the offer, there does not appear to be any way of opting in.  It is not appearing on online accounts and it is not on the Amex Network or cardmemberoffers.co.uk websites.

The Amazon promotion has very few rules:

You MUST register using the link in the email

You must be in the first 30,000 people to register

You must spend before 3rd December

I expect this offer to be hugely popular and there is a risk that the 30,000 person cap will be reached.  My recommendation is that you register immediately and then buy a £20 Amazon gift certificate and add it to your Amazon account.

This is how you do it:

Step 1:  Click here to visit the gift cards page on amazon.co.uk

Step 2:  Select ‘Send a gift card now: e-mail’

Step 3:  Select a random gift card design, select £20 as the value of the voucher and enter your own email address as recipient.  It does not matter if this is the same email address as you use for your Amazon account.

Step 4:  Pay using the American Express card which you registered

Step 5:  Wait a few minutes for the gift certificate to appear in your inbox

Step 6:  Visit this page on the Amazon website and redeem the gift certificate

The £20 credit now sits in your Amazon account.  It will be used automatically next time you place an order.  It doesn’t matter whether a product comes from Amazon directly or a Marketplace merchant – the credit is still accepted.  The certificate is valid for 10 years so there is little risk of you not using it.

If you have two Amex cardholders in your household who both received the email, there is no problem with ordering two £20 gift certificates using both cards and adding both certificates to the same Amazon account.  The gift vouchers are fully transferable.

Weird. I didn’t receive this email, perhaps because I spend a lot of money at Amazon?

    • Rich says:

      I am wondering the same

      • Rich says:

Had to call Amex this morning anyway so I asked them why the offer wasn’t showing in my account – they said it was probably targeted at people who haven’t used Amazon for a while.

        • ankomonkey says:

I rarely shop at Amazon and didn’t get it on either of my Amex cards. My wife buys something almost every week and got it on her one Amex card…

    • N says:

I spend a lot at Amazon, and did receive it for the PRG. Ditto for Mrs N.

  • Dave says:

I didn’t receive this either – but I did get an offer from Amex Platinum for £50 off at J.Crew for any purchases of £50 or over.

    • Ben says:

Same here, like the folk above, I make 5-10 orders from Amazon a month, so suspect they’re not too keen to in effect give me a free £20

Now what costs £50 at J Crew?!

      • Rob says:

Pop down to Sloane Square and find out!

      • Susan says:

Look on-line at the sale section – just picked up a rather jolly necklace for £9 – 50% off in sale plus £50 Amex. And it’s free delivery.

      • Mike says:

Bought myself some slippers at J Crew 🙂 No amazon offer here either.

      • Fenny says:

I looked at a hand knitted Aran sweater for £795 and decided I could do better myself for less than £50.

    • DeltaCharlie says:

Same here, no Amazon but got J.Crew and already invested in a new wash bag for AUH F redemption in 10 days time!

  • sandgrounder says:

I got the email but it was for my PRG.

  • Duncan S says:

I also got this offer but don’t have a BA Amex; only a Gold one and a new Lloyds Avios card (which I haven’t seen yet as I’m currently on a cruise – it came 2 days too late!) The card number at the top of the card is for the Lloyds Avios card, not the Gold one.

  • James Ward says:

Mine was for my Gold credit card (not charge card)

  • Cheshire Pete says:

Me neither, but I got the following yesterday instead via my Plat card. Perhaps enough for a scarf at that shop!

“As you’re an American Express Platinum® Cardmember, we like to treat you from time to time. Enjoy an exclusive £50 gift voucher to spend online, or at any UK J.Crew store, between 3 November and 15 December 2014, with our compliments.”

    • pauldb says:

Yes, this was the only one I got too (as a Plat and BA Amex holder).

  • Chris says:

I also got the offer, but it was for my AMEX preferred gold charge card.

  • Eshaq Choudhury says:

I got it for the gold charge card.

    • squills says:

Yep it’s on Gold, too – though unfortunately targeted.

Shame – with 30,000 redemptions you’d have thought it would be more widely available.
