Virgin Atlantic sale: up to 40% fewer miles needed for USA economy redemptions

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Virgin Atlantic has launched a new reward seat sale, focussing exclusively on destinations in the USA.  Full details can be found here.

Virgin has occasional economy redemption sales where you can save 25% on a flight.  However, this sale is offering mileage discounts of up to 40%!

Participating destinations are priced at a flat 25,000 miles return plus £249 of taxes and charges.

Virgin Atlantic 350

These rates are cheaper than comparable Avios redemptions at off-peak periods – and substantially cheaper than ‘peak period’ Avios redemptions.  Taxes on Virgin Atlantic are also, in economy, far lower than on British Airways.

Even better, this sale coincides with the current 20% transfer bonus on Tesco Clubcard vouchers to Virgin Atlantic.

Here are the rules:

Book by 20th May

No restriction on travel dates – you can book up to 11 months ahead

Economy only

The following routes are included:  Boston, New York JFK, Washington, Chicago, Atlanta (from Heathrow and Manchester), Detroit, Miami

Tax is fixed at £249 per person (£222 from Manchester to Atlanta)

100% miles redemptions only (no ‘Miles Plus Money’)

Open jaw flights (ie fly to New York, come back from Boston) OK as long as both destinations are in the sale

Virgin taxes on economy redemptions are lower (by roughly £100) than British Airways for economy redemptions.

This is what you would pay for a similar Avios redemption.  Remember that all of the Virgin routes cost 25,000 miles + £249 in taxes and charges:

New York JFK – 26,000 Avios off-peak / 40,000 peak + £338

Boston – 26,000 Avios off-peak / 40,000 peak + £338

Washington – 26,000 Avios off-peak / 40,000 peak + £338

Chicago – 26,000 Avios off-peak / 40,000 peak + £338

Atlanta – 33,000 Avios off-peak / 50,000 peak + £338

Detroit – not a BA route

Miami – 33,000 Avios off-peak / 50,000 peak + £338

This sale is pretty good. A return to New York will cost you 25,000 Virgin Flying Club miles compared to peak Avios pricing of 40,000 Avios. The taxes will be £246, saving £108 per person over BA.

It does not specifically mention whether these sale tickets can be combined with the Virgin credit card upgrade vouchers to Premium Economy, but that is not normally a problem.

Because of the two week booking period, there is plenty of time to convert some Tesco Clubcard vouchers to Virgin Flying Club if necessary.  There is currently a 20% bonus of Clubcard conversions so the rate is 300 miles per £1 of Tesco voucher.

You can also convert American Express Membership Rewards points to Virgin – these go across INSTANTLY as long as your Amex and Virgin accounts are already linked.

Virgin is also offering a 20% bonus if you buy Flying Club miles via this link before June 3rd. If you are a few thousand short then this is also an option.

There is also a 20% bonus on ‘Miles Booster’ which I will look at in a day or so.

Full details of the Virgin Flying Club reward seat sale can be found here on their website.

OT: Will spending Heathrow Rewards shopping vouchers spent at Heathrow collect Heathrow Rewards points?
The question is if using £20 in shopping vouchers (obtained by converting Emirates miles like you mentioned yesterday) + £5 in cash will count as a qualifying spend and if I thereby reach the £25 minimum spend required for the Etihad sign-up bonus at Heathrow Rewards?

    • Alan says:

When I’ve spent at Dixons before it’s worked that way – they gave me Heathrow Rewards points on the full balance and (in my view, correctly!) just treated the rewards vouchers as a form of cash payment. YMMV with other retailers though, but I’d hope it was the same.

    • Brian says:

If you want to guarantee the bonus, you could always buy a Caffe Nero gift card (they have them landside at Terminal 5) or mobile top-up at WHSmith….

      • The_Real_A says:

And also use your reigstered AMEX card to avail of the £5 off £10 at cafe nero:)

  • Neil says:

    • Ann says:

Got the email and booked 3 of us to fly 23rd Dec to Miami. Had to come back though on night of 31st (no big deal for us) as no flights available until 6th Jan. It was showing online Premium Economy on return but when I rang to upgrade, she not only had no availability to upgrade but also did not have the sale tickets for economy on her system! Also it would not allow me to process the whole thing as a return for some reason so had to do two singles online but not complaining!

  • Roy says:

Does anyone know whether flying out on the 15th April, returning 29th April is acceptable for this offer? i.e. is the 11 month rule applicable to outbound or both flights.

    • Pol says:

Flights for the 29th April are not yet available to book. If they appear before the end of the sale then yes they are included. If not you can’t book the outbound yet and add the inbound after the sale.

  • Idrive says:

Rob what is all this Virgin boosts signalling in your opinion? Just taking advantage of the BA situation, trying to get a bigger part of the cake or else?

    • Rob says:

The credit card offer is simply matching BA. The redemption sale is simply matching the new off-peak Avios pricing. The Clubcard bonus has run 2-3 times a year for years. No cunning plan at work, I think.

  • Andrew says:

Are one ways available on this offer?

  • Phil says:

    So Virgin has:-

    * Not just had a massive devaluation of miles
    * Is offering its highest ever credit card sign-up version
    * Has a 25% bonus on Tesco clubcard conversion
    * Has a 20% bonus on buying extra miles
    * Has a 40% discount on miles needed for North American redemptions
    * Has far lower taxes than BA

    and BA/Avios has:

    * Erm……….

  • Andrew says:

    Nice sale.

Will HFP be endorsing a party in today’s election? 😉

    • sandgrounder says:

I always just presumed it would be The Pirate Party

    • The_Real_A says:

“Helping hardworking families fly business class since 2012…” 🙂

    • Rob says:

HFP just endured a screaming fit from his 7-year old daughter after refusing to tell her how he voted, although I had to give in eventually. 4-year old took a cuddly dog to the polling station but was refused a ballot paper.

Interestingly, I would end up in court if I actually posted how I voted before 10pm tonight.

      • Alan says:

LOL what a passion for politics at such a young age! (or more likely just not happy about not being kept in the dark about something!!)

      • RK says:

Which party will give me the most miles if I vote for them? That’s how it works right?

        • Rob says:

Not sure. My 7-year old says I can’t vote for Ed because he’s ugly.

  • James says:

Interestingly virgin are offering miles booster on a reward booking I made yesterday. Buy the base milage or double base miles at 1p/mile.

I had no idea they would offer it on non cash bookings

    • Mark says:

Yes and with the 20% bonus it works out at 0.83p/mile, I think.
