Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Choose Avios or the new ‘double up’ Clubcard Boost promotion?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Tesco has launched another round of Clubcard Boost.  This is the promotion which allows you to spend your Clubcard vouchers instore or online for double their standard face value.

Full details are here at tesco.com.

You can double up your vouchers if you spend them on:

  • Toys
  • Garden & BBQs
  • Clothing
  • Electricals
  • Home, Cook & Dine
  • Skincare, Cosmetics & Fragrances
  • Sports & Leisure
  • Travel & Camping
  • Entertainment & Books
  • Gaming
  • Mobile Phones & Accessories
  • Opticians

Exclusions apply to all categories – you cannot get an iPad, for example, although Hudl tablets are included.

These deals are valid in store AND at Tesco Direct.  The Tesco website explains how to convert your Clubcard tokens into special Boost vouchers if you want to use them instore.  For Tesco Direct, your Clubcard tokens are automatically doubled.

Is this a better deal than converting to Avios?

It is not a slam dunk, but if Tesco Direct is selling something which you are definitely going to buy anyway then it is worth considering.

Let’s assume you want a £100 bike. That will cost you £50 of Tesco vouchers during Clubcard Boost. The same £50 of vouchers would get you 12,000 Avios or 12,500 Virgin Flying Club miles (15,000 Virgin miles during the current ‘20% bonus’ promotion’).

If you convert to Avios instead, and use hard cash to buy your bike, you are effectively ‘paying’ 0.83p per Avios.

For a lot of people, 0.83p is still a good price. If your Avios balance is already pretty high, though, you might want to think about whether buying something from Tesco Direct is a better deal or not. There is no right or wrong answer.

The deadline for taking advantage of these deals is 28th June.

Sorry, please can you explain how you get to work it out as 0.83p per avios.

    • Frogs says:

£100 (the cash price of the bike) / 12,000 Avios = 0.83p per Avios.

  • Adam says:

You can also purchase for £12.50 in CC points using the Boost to purchase for your kids a Fisher Price toy at the moment. This will come with 525 CC points back to your account as on a bonus clubcard offer at the moment.

  • JohnG says:

If he bought the bike with vouchers instead of Avios he’d save £100. £100 shared over the 12000 Avios he’d get is £0.008333^ = 0.833p per Avios.

Plus there’s the loss of credit card Avios, worth a further 1%-2%.

  • Dave B says:

The cruise deals are 3x and hotel deals are 3x

    • RussellR says:

You can only use max of £800 off a P&O booking now (£266 CC points), that’s off the select price. Really not worth it now. Last year we paid for an entire cruise with CC points.
For me this was great value, no taxes, all meals etc.

      • Rob says:

I was looking at Cunard Southampton to Hamburg but that failed as min 5 day trip required.

  • oyster says:

I presume Raffles, that you think this doesn’t offer good value to ‘grandfathered’ clubcarders? I make it only getting 0.625p per Avios which is close to base BA value.

    • Rob says:

Correct – although if you are cash poor and Avios rich, perhaps not.

  • Rob says:

Check the small print – I did an article on the other Clubcard travel deals last year and few were genuinely good.

  • SingingDwarf says:

Remember too that you can still get 4x face value on some days out tokens.

Of course, it’s sometimes possible to get child free or other discount codes for these venues, so it’s best to do research first. However even Boost is rarely best use of Tesco Club card vouchers…
