Get £5 cashback on £10 Post Office spend with American Express

American Express has launched a new cashback deal in association with the Post Office – and a pretty generous one at that.

I wrote back in April about how the Post Office had begun to accept Amex cards.  This offer is presumably part of that deal.

You can receive £5 cashback on your American Express card when you spend £10 at a Post Office before 29th July.

At the time of writing this deal is NOT on the cardmemberoffers.co.uk website.  This means that you can only access it via the ‘Offers’ section of your online American Express statement.  Only Amex-issued American Express cards (Gold, Platinum, BA, SPG, Nectar etc) will count.

You cannot register supplementary cards separately because the offer is only visible via the online Amex account of the main cardholder.

20,000 registrations will be accepted.  Given that you have two months to make a £10 purchase, it would be sensible to register all of your applicable cards.

The obvious thing to purchase is £10 of stamps, but any purchase for which American Express is accepted at the Post Office will do the trick.  Most Post Offices sell ‘One4all’ gift cards, usable in many High Street retailers, which is another possible option.

The main restriction is that online transactions and transactions made via a self-service machine in a Post Office branch do not count.

If you only have an Amex card issued by MBNA, Lloyds or TSB don’t be too concerned – there is a decent chance that this offer will eventually migrate to the cardmembersoffers.co.uk site.

Sorry forget that last question just reread above!!!!!

  • Mark C says:

Off topic somewhat but does purchasing Euros count towards a credit card sign up spend? Got a large family holiday to Spain this summer and the wife’s family prefer to take cash rather than a card so was hoping to get the cash for them and smash a couple of sign up targets in one go. Cheers

    • Rob says:

It does if you buy them for home delivery for travelmoneynow.co.uk as Amex runs this. All other FX routes will treat it as a cash advance.

      • Lionel says:

Oh has American Express Currency Exchange stopped working?

        • Rob says:

Amex Currency Exchange is only in Birmingham Airport now!

          • Lionel says:

I meant the avios.com portal in my link, ie online and delivery to home. Last time I did that I got 1000 free bonus Avios, 1 Avios per £1, free delivery and it all counted against my spend as real purchase not cash advance.

          • Mark C says:

Thanks for both of your replies. Lionel – the ‘Order Currency’ button on the link you provided redirects you to the travelmoneynow website so they are one and the same. One question – do you have to use an Amex issued Amex or can I use the Virgin Atlantic Amex? Cheers.

          • Rob says:

            Amex-issued Amex ONLY

  • oyster says:

Is anyone else having issues registering for amex connect? All my Amex-Amex cards (Wife’s BA Amex basic plus supplementary and my BA Prem Amex plus supplementary) throw an error saying this card can’t be recognised or is not eligible.

However my Virgin Amex (MBNA) can be registered.

Is this because I have online account access for the Amex issued cards? And if so that means I can’t register supplementary cards for offers as the offers aren’t listed for them.

If that’s the case it seems a bit odd that a supplementary Plat or Centurion can’t receive an offer but a freebie MBNA issued Amex can.

  • Nick says:

Can any advise how to load this offer on my 5 supplementary cards?

  • Lionel says:

Don’t forget your free £5 @ Boots – you can buy giftcards including 3Vs.

    All cards incl supplementaries.

    • Lucas says:

Is it possible to buy 3V cards online at boots and get credit for the offer?

  • Nick says:

Completely off-topic question that I’m inexplicably struggling with:

How flexible is a “fully flexible” fare? I assume I’m able to use it to book on to any available seat on the return leg within, say, a year of paying for the ticket. But what flexibility do I get on the outbound? If I book a fully flexible ticket departing at 10am and miss the outbound, can I use it to book on to the next flight (same airline, same route) at 11am? Would this involve a fee? Obviously this assumes there is availability on the 11am. The airline I’m looking at does not make it clear at all, so just wanted to check what I would normally expect for a fully flexible fare.

    Thanks!

    • Tim says:

Should be fully flexible, but can depend on airline! For example easyjet allows you to move your flight back and forward.

In theory, most fully flex fares are for the purpose you stated – if you miss the 10am flight, you can just move your booking to the 11am flight at no cost, providing you are at the airport in time

      • Nick says:

Thanks – I think I’ll book the fully flex then. I will also earn some extra loyalty scheme points…. so I now just need to work out how to get some use out of some airmiles for some obscure Asian airlines!

  • RT says:

can u actually pay your council tax at the post office?

    • Lionel says:

      Yes.

      Not on Amex though.

    • Liz says:

You can pay your council tax at the Co-op at the Paypoint and use Amex – although some people have had difficulty with this but I have paid 2 months now with no problems.

      • Fenny says:

My local Co-op claim they only take cash for Paypoint. Seems to totally miss the point. Who’s going to go and take out a couple of hundred quid in cash then walk to a Co-op to pay it in when they could just use a debit card to pay the same amount with no cash transaction?

        • Lionel says:

They are probably telling porkies (could be true in Norfolk). Ask them to do a dummy transaction.

          • Fenny says:

I’m sure they’re telling porkies. There are times when it’s too much hard work to argue. I’ll find another Paypoint outlet and sort it there.

          • Wally says:

My council stipulates that only cash is accepted through PayPoint but I’ve used my Amex with no problem (only once so far)!

  • Bob says:

I don’t think much of what our local post office is selling and thought stamps may be off limits. But no 4 cards £40 Stamps at half price! + a few pence balance. Brilliant!
