A potentially very good IHG Accelerate hotel promotion, especially for new members

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched its new Autumn promotion – IHG Accelerate.

Unlike the fairly lacklustre offerings from Hilton HHonors and Marriott Rewards which I wrote about here and here last week, the IHG one does offer genuine value.  At least, it does for me.  Your own personal target may differ.

In addition, it offers a VERY good deal for new members of IHG Rewards Club should you or your travelling partner not already be a member.

Here are the headline details:

IHG Accelerate covers stays from September 1st to December 31st

All hotels are participating

Your bonus is personalised – you need to log in here to discover yours – but will be worth at least 50,000 IHG Rewards Club points (which I value at £250)

This was my target for 87,800 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 7,200 points for completing four nights
  • 19,200 points for staying at two different brands
  • 9,600 points for staying at two Holiday Inn hotels
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 15,000 points for spending two consecutive weekend nights at an InterContinental
  • 27,000 points for hitting five of the above targets

I consider this very, very do-able – probably with stays I need to do anyway.  That would be (87,800 points x my £5 per 1000 valuation) £440 of free future stays.

My wife got this for 50,000 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 6,800 points for completing five nights
  • 2,000 points for booking a Bonus Points package
  • 500 points for spending $50 on food and drink whilst at a hotel
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 2,000 points for applying for the IHG Premium Visa
  • 33,700 points for hitting five of the above targets

I don’t like this.  She had the Visa but cancelled it this year, and even if she got it again it would represent a £99 investment due to the fee, admittedly offset by the sign-up bonus.  Having to run up food and drink spend in a hotel and book a Bonus Points package both require spending which may not otherwise be needed.

That said, if I can steer her into doing one IHG stay for work then it would be an easy 5,000 points for hitting the first of her targets.

Not already an IHG Rewards Club member?  You’re in luck.

If you are not already an IHG Rewards Club member, you will receive a special offer when you sign up via the link on this page.

One free night voucher for completing two paid stays (any brand, any length)

A second free night voucher for completing four paid stays (any brand, any length)

This could work out very nicely.  The free night vouchers are valid wherever a standard reward night is shown as available.

You could make a substantial saving by doing four stays at a very cheap Holiday Inn Express – perhaps booking and checking in (but not necessarily staying) for the dead days around Christmas – and then using your two free nights at a £250+ per night InterContinental in New York, Paris, Hong Kong, London etc next year.

Before you get any ideas, I should stress that IHG is very good at picking up duplicate accounts.  They appear to cross reference lots of data, including the credit card used to pay for stays.  However, if your travelling partner is not an IHG Rewards Club member then this would be a good chance to sign them up.

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is probably the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Autumn.  There is an Accor promotion coming down the line which may be better if your IHG target is unreasonable.

Log in to the Accelerate website here and see what your target is.

Mrs Whiskerxx has to download the app, stay 1 night and spend $39 on food & beverage to earn 37800 points. Seems little point in completing the other offer which requires another 4 nights for only another 10200 points.

My offer yields 42000 for two 1 night stays at a HIX, using the app to book both, using IHG cc to pay, one stay to be on a points bonus package, and need to spend $39 on food & bev.

  • Kathy says:

Ah well, I’m not finding anything near me for much less than £60 a night, which is a bit pricey for me to mattress run.

Back to plan A, I think.

    • craig paolozi says:

I can get HI Metro centre for £37 per night!

      • Kathy says:

Living ‘up North’ does have some advantages!

        • craig says:

Yes hell of a lot lol if I booked through MasterCard I can get £33 and I’ve just confirmed with ihg that that rate will count as qualifying

          • Roger says:

            Correct! – from the T+Cs:
‘IHG® Rewards Club points will be awarded for stays booked under this offer.’

I was a little surprised by that as these ‘partner’ rates such as Friends anf Family, Shareholder, RAC typically do not. The only down side seems to be the inability to cancel.

          • Roger says:

Sorry, RAC partner bookings DO qualify for IHG credit.

£34 at the HI Runcorn on various Friday nights throughout the rest of the year, and it has a pool. We live close enough that we could check-in, use the pool as the family, go home, pop back the next day and use the pool again!

        • Peter says:

What dates have you found in Runcorn for £34? Cant really see below £40.

  • Tony says:

I’ve got a trip to the US coming up in November with two mates, and still need to book 3 room nights for us, which is potentially 9 nights total. Just need to juggle the logistics and I reckon I’m there.

  • Conor says:

Hi all – Newbie to the IHG game. Seems I can stay once in Sept and get 10k points. Pretty easy for a cheap night and not actually stay. Or maybe a 3 nighter somewhere for 16k points.

Not sure that staying 18 nights somewhere is a great deal between Sept – Dec. I assume I would need 18 nights stay at circa £60 a night meaning a spend of circa £1,000 for the 58k points. I’m I on the right track with that please? Thank you.

5,000 Stay once in September and earn 5,000 bonus points.
    5,000 Stay Once Get 5,000
6,000 Stay 3 nights and earn 6,000 bonus points.
3,000 Stay 3 more nights Get an additional 3,000 points after night 6.

Planning a reward stay at the IC Park Lane , around the 22nd Nov. when would be the best time to get ambassador status using points to pay for Ambassador?
Currently spire elite and using the IHG voucher and 50K to book the room.
Also, am I likely to get a better upgrade by leaving it later to book the room?
All the above thanks to, this site, Raffles 🙂

    • Rob says:

Soon, you need to give a month for the box to arrive (if you want to use the 241 voucher at Park Lane).

      • Jason says:

Wasn’t intending to use the 241, just the IHG premium card voucher and 50k points.
Ideally wanted to leave the ambassador purchase until beginning of November so I still had ambassador status in case I need it on the way home from Rangali and was stopping in Singapore or Hong Kong!

      • Leo says:

Also planning to buy Ambassador with points – hear what you say about waiting a month for the pack to actually arrive. I want to use the 241 voucher in Bangkok in March. I’m guessing I can’t book the 241 night (will be booking 2 nights cash +241) through the Ambassador page unless I have the certificate physically in my hand from your previous comment? Or am allowed to do that beforehand? Obviously I have to have the certificate with me at the hotel….

  • Davey says:

Just wondering: my wife has signed up to get the two free nights after four stays – does she need to show up or can I check in alone (in a room booked for two) and give her IHG number to qualify for the promo?

  • Graham Walsh says:

Mine looks a bit pants, only planning on one stay later this year.

1,000 Stay Once Get 1,000 – Thank you for being a loyal IHG® Rewards Club member.
20,800 Discover Our Brands – Stay at 3 number of brands and get 20,800 bonus points
    9,600 You’re On Your Way – Get a great start by staying at 2 Crowne Plaza® hotel(s)
3,600 Stay for Less and Earn – Earn 3,600 bonus points when you book 3 stay(s) using Points and Cash
    2,000 Get the IHG® Rewards Club Visa®
37,000 Your Achievement Bonus – Complete 5 of 5 offers and earn (an additional) 37,000 bonus points.

  • Ryan says:

Mine seems to be a little simpler (and easier) than most – made a couple HI stays last year for work but that’s it:

    1,000 Stay Once Get 1,000
    13,800 5 nights
    2,000 Get the IHG® Rewards Club Visa®
    33,200 Your Achievement Bonus

Complete 3 of 3 offers and earn (an additional) 33,200 bonus points.

Still probably just have the Wife sign up for the 4 stays for 2 free nights. Have a couple of Stansted departures coming up so can stay at the HIX there and the HI and HIX in Colchester are only £55 or so a night.
