Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get £15 off a £25 Amazon purchase for ALL Amex Gold and Platinum holders

American Express sent out an interesting offer to its Gold, Green, Centurion and Platinum cardholders yesterday.

You will save £15 on your next Amazon order of £25 or more as long as you part-pay with Membership Rewards points.

If your account is set to ‘no marketing’ then you may not have received it.  Not to worry, it is still open to you.

As I wrote in this article here, you can now use your American Express Membership Rewards points to pay for Amazon orders.

The rate is poor – just 0.45p per point.  You are far better off using your points for something more valuable such as airline miles or hotel points.

The process is seamless though.  Once you have linked your Membership Rewards account to your Amazon account, you will be given the option to pay or part-pay with points every time you check out.

There is a little quirk in this deal which lets you maximise the value you get.

This is what you need to do to save £15:

If you have not already done so, link your Membership Rewards account with your Amazon account by visiting this page on the Amazon website

Buy £25 of items on amazon.co.uk (these must all be sold by Amazon and not third party merchants, and excludes digital content, including digital gift cards)

Enter code AMEX16SWP at check out

Part-pay for your order using Membership Rewards points.  The sneaky option is to redeem just 2 points for a 1p discount.  This saves you ‘wasting’ Membership Rewards points on a low value redemption.

The offer runs until 31st January.  However, it is limited to the first 33,333 people to order so I wouldn’t leave it too late.

Nice one. Saw the amex email but didn’t realise you could part pay.

  • JaFooli says:

I received the email a few days but deleted it because I knew that it was poor value.

Rob’s trick worked, only used 2 points. Thanks Rob.

  • mef13 says:

This worked a treat, but gave the error message when I tried to redeem just 2 points. Making it a £1 redemption (222 points) worked, so there appears to be a minimum in there somewhere. I figure that’s 7p per point overall, so quite happy!

    • JaFooli says:

I typed in £ 0.01 and it was 2 points, so no minimum.

      • mef13 says:

OK. I did the same but then it rejected the code as invalid. Ah well.

        • the real harry says:

it must be an Amazon supplied item

it has to be Gold or Plat Amex card

you have to choose to pay with that card

you then use 0.01p of Amex points

then you apply the code & it takes off he £15

    • Genghis says:

      I don’t follow your maths?

  • Lynn says:

Thanks, I had a spare 70 points, excellent offer. I am quite new to your website and it is excellent!

  • Boi says:

So am I stuck in paying with the amex card if I do this? I tried to apply 2 points but I cant then change to pay with my gift card balance?

    • Rob says:

      Yes

    • Johnny_c-l says:

If you have your default payment set to gift card then it will let you pay with the gift card balance before trying to take payment from the Amex card.

      • Alan says:

Not with this offer in my experience – that seemed to cause to to reject it. I had to stick with paying on the Amex to get the code to work.

        • Nick says:

It did work. It wanted to take renaming amount from my Amex on the Amazon app. When I used the web version, the balance was taken from my gift card balance

  • Robert says:

great one Rob. dishwasher tablets 180 for £9 , bargain!

    • michael says:

Thanks for the idea. – just got 180 Finish tablets for 9.99!

      • mark2 says:

On the advice of the dishwasher technician we buy big boxes of dishwasher detergent from Sainsbury’s for £3, He said that all the fancy stuff in the tablets usually dissolves at the wrong time and there is a rinse aid dispenser in the machine.

  • Jerry says:

Thanks for the Christmas gift Rob, read the Amex email last night and decided it was terrible value. Then read your post this morning and decided 2 points for £15 was exceptional value! (Also combines with subscribe and save).

  • Richard says:

I just tried a number of different products but it is saying ‘The promotional code you entered cannot be applied to your purchase.’ And I even tried dishwasher tabs!

    • Peter K says:

I did the same with a different product but remember to make sure it is sold and delivered by Amazon. It’s awkward at first to spot where it says it but I’ve just got the discount now.
