Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Here are some hotels where you can redeem your points for suites

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

The extremehoteldeals site has been running a series of well-researched articles on hotels which let you redeem for suites or high end rooms at standard rates.  In some cases this may be an error, whilst in other cases it is simply the hotel trying to encourage more points bookings.

(EDIT 2020: the links below are now behind a paywall unfortunately)

Crowne Plaza Liverpool Airport

The key Hilton one for the UK (apart from Conrad Maldives offering water villas for the usual price of land villas) is Hilton London Tower Bridge which is offering family rooms for the standard price of 70,000 points.  These sleep four people.

The IHG list has two hotels of interest to UK residents:

Crowne Plaza Liverpool John Lennon Airport (photo below) – suite, with lounge access, for 20,000 points per night

Crowne Plaza Harrogate – suite for 20,000 points per night

It is worth checking the lists for any interesting offers in places you are planning to visit this year.

OT, I’ve upgraded from BA Blue to BAPP (via a new application online as chat couldn’t upgrade me, they said call up or do a new application). Logged in this morning and card now showing black with a new number. I think my existing blue card can still be used and will go against my BAPP now?

    • Graham Walsh says:

Answered my own question. Used it for TFL and the pre authorised 10p is on my BAPP.

  • Grimz says:

OT Is the platinum bonus upgrade from Gold still available? If yes, has anyone got the link?

    Thanks in advance

OT: Just tried to pay VAT with debit curve – wouldn’t allow it. Back to the drawing board then.

    • Rob says:

Try £200 as a test. No reason why it shouldn’t work.

      • Alex says:

several £ 200 payments were accepted; tried to pay £300 – payment declined…

        • Leo says:

          Was that VAT?

        • Alex says:

…should have said that it was income tax payment, not VAT (probably does not matter anyway).

          • Rob says:

You have a personal risk profile with Curve. Oddly a reader just emailed and said that he’d been OK getting £2k through (the daily Curve limit) which also makes me think it is partly down to who issues the underlying card and how they see large Curve transactions when they first turn up.

        • Leo says:

I was going to ask that – because the Creation/IHG has a bit of a flaky 3D verification process. I could try the Virgin visa I suppose.

      • Leo says:

        Tried twice.

      • Leo says:

Ok £200 went through ok. £500 did not. How may £200 payments can I make? Only ever made two payments maximum per tax.

  • Louise says:

OT: Lego City 1000 Clubcard points just started

  • MarkH says:

OT but hotel related – which hotel scheme is it that allows you to book reward nights without having the required number of points?

I’ve read about it on here but before can’t remember which one it was…

  • wally1976 says:

OT – I read a comment on here a week or so back saying someone thought that Avios.com were adding the option of booking one-way flights using the Lloyds voucher on the website rather than having to phone.

I’ve been trying to do this today and have found that if you click “Use This” under your voucher and proceed to try and make a one-way booking it fails with a “Page Not Found” error. However, if you then go to the “How to spend” menu and click “Search for flights” as if doing a booking without the voucher it will proceed on the basis of using the voucher. I haven’t actually completed a booking but it looks like (via this circuitous route) you can now book one-ways online with the voucher :-).

Incidentally I used the online chat and the agent was insistent that it is not possible to book one-ways using the voucher on the website. I asked why there was a tickbox for it and they said they’d feedback to the team. Waste of time (probably)!

    • Anna says:

I had this conversation with them last week! They said their IT department was still trying to sort it out. If anyone manages to make the full booking, let us know!

      • wally1976 says:

I’m waiting on availability to (hopefully) pop up for the date I want! Dummy booking was on an alternative date.

    • s***o says:

I did this yesterday! (worked perfectly!)
However I did use for quite the worst value ever LHR-AMS off peak and only saved 7,500 avios!
But in my defense had 1 day to use the voucher before it expired!

      • wally1976 says:

We don’t currently fly long haul so not getting the best value out of these vouchers either. Mind you, we have used a couple for Paphos which is almost the longest short haul you can get! Just difficult to find 4 x CE seats in the school hols.

  • 304 says:

O/T: Does the gold card deactivate once the gold to plat upgrade goes through or can I continue to use the gold card online/offline to work towards the spending bonus? Asking as will be traveling and won’t be able to get my hands on plat card but would like to start spending asap.

  • Brian says:

Points breaks can now be booked…

    • Brian says:

And there are some decent options. HIX Wandsworth and Hammersmith for 15,000 points – that really IS London! Plus Holiday Inn Nice!!
