News in brief:

Could you host a HFP Summer Party?

We are thinking – tentatively – about doing a HFP Summer Party this year after the huge success of the last two Christmas events.  (Here are the photos from last Christmas.)  If we’re going to do it, however, we’re going to need some help.

Whilst we love the Dry Martini bar at the Melia White House, it has no windows and is not necessarily suited to a Summer event.  We would probably need a different venue.  We also need something which is effectively pre-packaged because Anika and I only have a limited amount of time we can commit given our current travel plans.

It would be a lower key event than Christmas – no raffle, no speeches.  It would be late June or early July, before the schools break up on Friday 13th.

We’d like to hear from you if you think your employer or company could host us.  There are two possible formats:

You work for a high-end bar, potentially in a hotel in Zone 1, which could host 150-250 people (depending on your capacity) between 6pm and 8pm on a Mon / Tue / Wed night.  Your classy venue has lots of light and possibly, but not necessarily, some outdoor space.  You would get all of the bar takings and would expose your venue to a group of mainly higher-income London professionals.

or

You work for a high-end retailer, perhaps a gallery or travel-related business or Avios partner retailer, in Zone 1 who would be interested in having 150-250 (depending on your capacity) mainly higher-income London professionals through the door one evening for a reception.  In this scenario we would expect you to provide the drinks and catering staff, but we would pass the ticket money on to you.

If your company is interested, please drop me a note at rob at headforpoints.co.uk.

Why you need to book Flybe redemptions on avios.com

(EDIT:  It seems that the paragraphs below may be incorrect and due to an BA call centre operator who did not know the rules.  The comments below imply that – whilst ba.com does give you an e-ticket saying that you have no baggage allowance for Flybe – this is overridden at check-in and you will not be charged.)

With the avios.com platform soon to be closed, this article may have little long term use – although it is possible that it will still apply to redemptions via Aer Club, Vueling Club etc on the Avios platform.

Historically, Flybe tickets booked with Avios on ba.com came with one checked bag included.  The website said it didn’t but, when ticketed, it did.  This has now changed, and Flybe redemptions are ‘hand baggage only’.

However …. Flybe redemptions booked on avios.com still include one suitcase as standard.  Annoyingly you will find different availability on avios.com and ba.com so it isn’t necessarily as simple as saying ‘forget ba.com for Flybe’.

Here is a screenshot from a Flybe e-ticket receipt booked on ba.com which clearly shows that no suitcases are allowed.  Our reader called BA who confirmed this.  Luckily he was within the 24 hour cooling off period, so he cancelled the original redemption and rebooked via avios.com.

  1. OT: the gold card becoming a credit card has kind of torpedoed my upgrade plans. I currently have plat. Coming up to end of card year and I want to refer my OH to plat and then cancel.

Was planning on referring to gold and the upgrading – I guess now I have no option but to refer directly to plat if I want to avoid missing out on sign up bonus?
