Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Here’s the August date for the full Marriott / SPG merger – and news on Travel Packages

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I spoke to David Flueck, the big cheese at Marriott Rewards (his business card says something more prosaic) yesterday.  He filled me in on the timeline for the merger of the SPG and Marriott programmes.

This is what we already knew:

During August there is a ‘big bang’ day when the two programmes effectively become one.  The two scheme names – Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest – will continue and there will be two websites, but they will be clones of each other.

The new reward chart kicks in from this date – we talked about the new chart here, highlighting the best and worst of the changes

The new elite tiers kick in – we discussed those here

Your existing Starwood points balance gets multiplied by three

The new benefits package kicks in – for example, top tier elite members will start to get free breakfast at brands such as Moxy and JW Marriott Resorts where they do not get it today.

In January, there will be a 2nd round of changes when the new scheme name will be unveiled, a new website launched and the existing Marriott Rewards and SPG sites closed.

Pretty much everything you need to know is in my article from March here and my article from June on the new Marriott / Starwood redemption chart here.

What we didn’t know is the date.  Now we do.

The new combined scheme will launch on Saturday 18th August.  It will cover 6,500 hotels in 127 countries.

There will be a substantial period of downtime whilst the databases are moved across – and 20 million new lines of code added and tested, apparently – so it isn’t clear exactly when on Saturday 18th August you will be able to make redemptions.

This is important if you are planning to jump in on some of the 60,000 point bargains which will be available.  These are hotels which will jump to as much as 105,000 points per night from January when the new Category 9 and peak pricing begins.

At the extreme, hotels such as St Regis Maldives will drop from the equivalent of 270,000 points per night now to 60,000 points if you book between 18th August and 31st December, for stays up to 31st December 2019.

The new combined programme will have 110 million members.   If the new scheme was a country, it would be the 12th biggest by population.

Marriott and Starwood loyalty scheme merger 18 August

The new scheme name will not be revealed until January 2019.  Just to make life awkward for people like myself who need to write about it ….

From 18th August you will be able to formally merge your current Marriott Rewards and SPG accounts.  Once you have done, you will see a combined points balance and combined elite nights total when you log in to either website.

All SPG members will receive a new 9-digit account number that aligns with the specifications of the new system.  The new account number will appear through a pop-up when they log into their account. Passwords will stay the same unless you decide to change it. Some members of Marriott Rewards will also receive a new account number. These members will receive an email with their new account information.

What happens if you don’t trigger the merger? You end up with two accounts in the ‘new Marriott’ scheme.

I took the opportunity to ask David about the two key merger questions that I am always asked:

Is it now 100% certain that anyone who has Marriott Gold from a Starwood Gold match, and whose Starwood Gold came as a credit card perk, will be Gold and not Platinum in the new scheme?

Yes.

(If you are Marriott Gold because you earned it, you become Platinum in the new scheme.  Platinum in the new scheme is, in terms of benefits, the same as Gold in the old scheme.)

What will happen to existing Marriott Travel Packages which are not yet redeemed?

I did not get the answer that you may have wanted.  Travel Packages are well down the list of priorities at the moment.  Marriott will NOT be telling people before 18th August what will happen to their existing unused package.

David’s recommendation is to redeem now if you want to be certain of getting a specific hotel, but of course that is no use if you want what is currently a Starwood property.

If you are on the fence about getting a Travel Package, I can’t help you decide.  You won’t know before 18th August if you will get a better deal or not by waiting.

After 18th August, redemptions of existing Travel Package hotel certificates will be suspended.

David specifically said to me that Marriott is considering voiding all outstanding Travel Packages after 18th August and refunding the hotel part.

This may not happen.  It is possible that they find a way of mapping existing packages across to the new categories.  However, be aware that – after 18th August – you will not be able to book a hotel using an existing Travel Package certificate until they have made up their mind. You are at the mercy of Marriott as to whether they decide to reimburse your points (less the value of the airline miles you’ve already had) or find a way of letting you book a comparable hotel to the old category system.

For clarity, if you buy a Travel Package after 18th August based on the new pricing chart you won’t have any problems.  You can redeem that without issue.

Most people sitting on Travel Package certificates were hoping to redeem for Starwood hotels.  This may well not happen now and they will be disappointed.

But …. it is possible that some people may be happy to get a large part of the cost of their package refunded. I will look at why in a future article.  For the brave, there could be an interesting gamble here.

  • James says:

Any idea what will happen to the SPG points supposed to be earnt from the SPG AMEX ?
Thinking specifically about my spend bonus (having just got the card).

    • rts says:

      3-1.

      • Genghis says:

It remains to be seen though how it will work in practice.
E.g. if statement date say of 30 Aug, points normally transfer across on 25th of the month, on 18 Aug do all Amex SPG points balances get multiplied by 3, then ongoing earning rates are 3 / £? Or stay in old SPG points until transferred whence x 3 on transfer?

  • Ricky Tsang says:

    Hmmmmmmmm do i risk it……

  • Boi says:

    OT but SPG related somewhat.

I have 2 separate hotel bookings (Hilton) to make. It costs €2940 and €2115.

I can either book with lloyds Or SPG card. I have double points promo on the SPG card but will be hit with Fx fee.
SPG will mean I still have amex platinum insurance for the booking.

    Which one will you choose?

    • Amar says:

Depends on how you view fees. Personally I wouldn’t use the Amex due to the fees, however it may work:

1 EUR of spending = 2 SPG points = ~3p of value, which offsets your fees.

If you can get more than 1.5p of value from each SPG point, then it makes sense to use the Amex

    • BJ says:

It would be one (BAPP or FC) or two new credit cards with sign up bonuses for me. If those were not possible amex plarinum cb cards?

      • Genghis says:

Having to use an Amex issued Amex to get the full travel insurance benefit can make the insurance quite expensive if not looking to hit a sign up / you would otherwise hit a sign up.
E.g. In this case the EUR amounts translate to c. £2611 and £1,914. Using 3% surcharge is £78,33 and £57.42. This is offset by the value of SPG on double points but the alternative would be using say Revolut say linked to HSBC prem and earning 1 mile / £ (no surcharge). E.g. using the Plat insurance for these hotels would cost an additional £45.25. This kinda thing should be taken into account when deciding on travel insurance provider.

        • Boi says:

Thanks all. I have actually just checked my email and realise last year I bought annual travel insurance due to expire October 2018. So it actually covers my trip in August. I don’t need to pay with Amex after all.

Very silly of me to forget!

        • james says:

I have Amex Plat and an SPG Amex……. does this mean if I use the SPG Amex I can still make use of the travel insurance provided by the Amex Plat ??

        • Genghis says:

@James Yes. The health stuff included regardless but for inconvenience sections, payment on an amex is an amex issued amex per terms.

      • roberto says:

Can you not part pay both with the Amex to get the Insurance and the bulk with lLiyds to make the FX savings ?

        • roberto says:

          * Lloyds…..

        • Genghis says:

For the benefits under this section to apply transport and/or
accommodation must have been Purchased in full using:
          I. the Card;
II. American Express Membership Rewards® points; or
III. Any travel rewards programmes provided the taxes
          and/or surcharges have been Purchased
          using the Card.

        • John Crilly says:

With recent experience, you receive the Platinum insurance if you make the booking with any amex.

        • Genghis says:

@John Crilly So for instance a Lloyds Amex was accepted?

  • meta says:

Isn’t the earning rate for SPG Amex going from 1 to 3 points from 1 August? Potential for briefly earning 6 MR points per £1 if you have a statement date mid-month?

  • Simon says:

Would anyone be able to advise me on the following? (Not looking for surety, just best guess really.) I have a Tier 4-5 Hotel certificate via a Marriott Travel Package. I ideally would like to use this for a seven night stay in November 2019 at a R-C hotel, but appreciate that this is beyond a year out. If I booked a seven night stay at my preferred hotel NOW for just under a year out (say, for June 2019) BUT THEN TRIED TO ALTER THE BOOKING FOR NOVEMBER 2019 (WHENEVER THAT BOOKING WINDOW OPENS UP, PERHAPS IN DECEMBER 2018), would this work? i.e. If I cash in a certificate now, would I be able to change the booking dates in the future, especially given the impending August change to the Marriott program?

Any advice would be very gratefully received.

  • Nick says:

Rob, can you give a quick intro to your ‘brave gamble’ please? Or a hint for when you plan to release the article? I’m currently trying to work out whether building up a large SPG balance works for me (I have some already, plus considering moving a lot of MRs from a card I’m about to close) – if the ‘gamble’ is good then that might convince me…

    • Rob says:

      Tomorrow. Just written it!

      • james says:

        Exciting 🙂

Have no idea what to do !
Don’t have a destination in mind but have 70K SPG and 130K Amex MR which I’m considering merging for a TP (at current rates) but see I have to book before August 18th.

Sadly the 11K SPG points from the Amex SPG card won’t hit for another 2 months 🙁
NOTE: Its usually 10K but you get an extra 1K if you’re referred so give Rob a shout for referral.

  • RTS says:

On another note… how do I actuallt use my travel package certificate? Can i do it online or do I have to ring through?

i can’t seem to get it to work online.

    • RK says:

You have to call unfortunately and deal with their annoying phone system that asks you to say what you want to do, yet does not recognise travel packages as an option.

  • Jtz says:

To book the st regis Maldives for 60000 points how many MR points would I need per night?
    Thanks

    • Genghis says:

Assuming MR = Marriott Rewards, 60k. Assuming Amex Membership Rewards, 40k.

      • Jtz says:

Sorry meant Amex points. So 5 nights would be 160000 Amex points with the 5 nights for 4 offer?
        Thanks

        • james says:

          Yep.

MR transfers to SPG at 2:1 and then SPG to Marriot at 1:3.
          40 / 2 = 20 ; 20 x 3 = 60.
