Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

American Express Membership Rewards transfer rate to Marriott Bonvoy confirmed

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

This is not unexpected, but it is good to have it confirmed.

The American Express Membership Rewards hotel transfers page (click here) has been updated to show that transfers to the new combined Marriott / Starwood programme will go through at a 2:3 ratio.

It erroneously shows as ‘3 Starpoints’ instead of ‘3 points’ but I’m sure Amex will fix that.

This is as we expected, as the old ratio to Starwood was 2:1 with Starwood to Marriott at 1:3.

In theory transfers should restart from today after a suspension whilst the Starwood / Marriott IT merger was completed.

  • Genghis says:

OT … and now back down to Gold with Marriott as expected.

    • Tom1 says:

I’m still plat elite…. For the time being.

    • RIccatti says:

      Some people got Platinum

I have the record of qualifying nights SCRAMBLED, double qualifying night (personal promotion) erased, second room qualifying nights erased, and it seems, qualifying nights from credit card (US Amex) erased..

Qualified as Plat for next year in July with nearly 60 nights and sights to Platinum Premier. Only to discover the account showing slightly above 40 nights after August 18th…

    • thehornets says:

Did the ‘Amex Gold members remain Platinum for the remainder of the year’ not materialise?

I presume that I have missed something because I thought that was one of the early announcements

      • mutley says:

Same here, though I took Robs advice and did the Platinum challenge via plenty of Moxy stays before end of July. are you a ornnn by the way?

      • Alan says:

They backtracked on that soon after announcing it.

    • Tom H says:

      +1 down to lowly gold!

    • Graham Walsh says:

Same here. Down to Gold Elite 🙁

    • BJ says:

      Same here 🙁

    • Brian S says:

Another one here. My wife’s account had been showing Platinum since the weekend but now back down to Gold as expected.

    • Optimus Prime says:

      Same here 🙁

    • Tilly says:

      Me too
………plus all my points are missing!

    • Tracy says:

Yup, back to gold for me too 🙁

    • Alan says:

      Ditto, just as expected.

    • Alex W says:

Boo, both me and Mrs W back down to gold again. Another slap in the face from Marriott.

      • Lady London says:

Just cancel all of your bookings then.

I am sure they will have taken into account that lots of you will remove business from them after they backtracked and it would be rude not to let them know this by canceling any bookings you may have made based on their previous announcements that you would still receive what they had said.

        • Alex W says:

We haven’t got any bookings and unlikely to be making any cash bookings in the future.
Had we retained Plat then very likely we would have made bookings.

        • AndyGWP says:

I’m cursed with non-refundables made prior to any of these changes being announced. Had an 8pm flight as well so was banking on the 4pm checkout and paid extra to stay at a Marriott to guarantee it. Gutted!

  • guesswho2000 says:

My Plat has gone too 🙁

On a good note, glad to see they haven’t applied the 3:2 ratio to the UK MR programme (it has gone that way in Aus, as in 3MR:2SPG).

This, I suppose, at least evens out the disparity between countries, MR points pile up much quicker on Aussie cards, plus the currency difference…was getting 1xSPG Starpoint per AUD$1. Oh well!

  • VJ says:

Should I be using my Marriott account number to link on Amex now?

  • Genghis says:

Another OT. Does Virgin Money amend the Direct Debit amount if you make manual payments after the statement has generated?

  • RIccatti says:

UK SPG American Express card is a mess.

    1) Points been tripped but referral bonus being inserted as 9000 (old Starwood pts).

    2) Transactions not updating to the total.

    3) The retention offer of x2 (old Starwood pts) turned out to be +1 New Marriott (+1/3 old Starwood) point.

On top, the mobile app and website show different things and no transfers to new Marriott/Starwood until “mid-September”.

Even if MR is separate type of points, given disarray with SPG/Marriott accounts, there is NO POSSIBILITY AMEX will be able to transfer anything now.

    • Brian S says:

My points transferred from SPG Amex (33,000 of them) at the end of July and no sign of them hitting my SPG account.

      • Guesswho2000 says:

I had around 17k SPG transfer from the SPG Amex card to SPG successfully at the end of July, they’re now showing, still in SPG, as ~51k points, so seems all is well for some of us, but not others.

The remaining few thousand points in my Marriott account are still there too, although my Gold went to platinum for a few days, and is now gold again. SPG Gold remains.

      • Russ says:

Mine from the 14th July didn’t post along with a few members on here. Then when I had almost written them off they suddenly appeared. Have about a 1000 now lost somewhere again but I’m going to cancel the card and start the bonus clock ticking.

    • Chris Schofield says:

I believe 9k is correct for new points. It used to be 5k old points so there’s been a [conscious] devaluation in the referral rather than it just not being updated.

    • Ian M says:

I’ve spent a few hours on the phone and chat with Amex regarding the double points (1 extra starpoints per pound) offer for 3 months. I have an official complaint ongoing at the moment.

My offer started in June. The Amex website and app still states on all my transactions since the start of August “Bonus – 1 additional Starpoint for 3 months” but they’re in fact giving me 1 Marriott point not 1 Starpoint.

I’ll keep you all updated with the result of my complaint. I suggest you submit your own as well.

    • S**mo says:

I have a case open with AMEX on the retention offer – Been told its been escalated and to wait 10 days for feedback.

  • Mark says:

Amex website seems not to have actually changed for the merged marriott. The transfer button is still missing, as well as still referring to SPG points

  • Graham Walsh says:

OT Headed up to Edinbugh yesterday. Saw the new BA in flight safety video. Just as annoying as the old one. Safe format.

Also, they are building a Moxy and Hampton Inn just in front of the airport.

    • Andrew says:

More hotels at the airport will be very welcome.

The old Stakis is often full or at a price that is a considerable premium to reasonable expectations of the room.

    • Alan says:

Yep, amazing how many new rooms will be opening soon! Hope you got to catch some good stuff at the Fringe when you were here 🙂

    • TripRep says:

Finally stayed at DoubleTree North Queensferry the other week, got a suite upgrade, great view of bridges, cheap bus to city centre and airport, plus free parking whilst you fly out of EDI, worth considering…

  • Brian S says:

OT: does anyone know where I can find my Marriott status expiry date?

I received Platinum as one of those who was undertaking the challenge. I was being greedy and hoped they would make me Platinum Premier but that doesn’t look like the case. Was just wanting to confirm the date my platinum expires.
