  • S879 says:

OT: I upgraded my hotel statuses when I signed up to Amex Platinum last year. I have the Platinum again now. Can I do through the same with existing membership numbers so the expiry of statuses is extended such as Marriott?

    • Rob says:

Can do but no guarantee it is extended. They may ignore your new request and expect you to wait until you drop down to ask again.

      • J says:

If you keep the card permanently do they auto-renew the statuses?

        • Mike says:

          yes, they do auto-renew.

Some people like to have the platinum card on a 6 month cycle for the points bonus

        • J says:

I bet they also want the extra luggage tags! 😀

I did think about it, but have decided to keep it permanently for the uninterrupted insurances and an easy life.

        • Scallder says:

J – no more luggage tags! My wife got the Platinum card last week and they no longer come with luggage tags. To be honest all of ours in the past have gone straight in the bin so certainly better for the environment…

        • MarkH says:

Scallder – you should have put them on eBay!

Had 4 sets lying around and wasn’t sure what to do with them and then found out people are actually willing to pay around £15 plus £2 postage for them, which I couldn’t believe.

Much better than chucking in the bin!

  • Brian says:

OT: New Hilton offer has appeared on my Gold Credit Card – 50 pounds off 250.

    • Froggee says:

Thanks – got it on my BA blue but not my platinum. Was hoping one would pop up for a December stay. Got £5 off Amazon on both cards which I think is new too.

      • Nigel says:

Brilliant. Booked a £252 room in Manchester last week for our wedding anniversary. Pleased to see this offer on my Platinum ????

      • RakishDriver says:

Yep, got the £5 off amazon on my BA, defo new

    • Anna says:

Thanks – got it on Platinum, we have a pre-Xmas break booked in December!

    • Crafty says:

Look at the participating locations before booking. It’s European properties only.

  • Tom Cook says:

OT – bit of a data point following other comments on this matter earlier in the week. I cancelled my SPG card back in March. I then took the card back out again at the start of October with a referral from Plat ;).

After a £1k transaction the bonus 30k points are now showing in my account (there was no tracker, they’ve just appeared). I know some people have been told various things with regard to the SPG card but all seems normal to me.

  • Roger says:

    QR
I am booked on a flight but via Amex Travel, presumably will not be entitled for the free WIFI.

  • Craig says:

OT: IHG Ambassador weekend, are taxes waived for the second night as well as the room charge?

    • Rob says:

Taxes based on room rate are as the room rate is zero, flat rate tourist taxes are not.

      • Craig says:

Thanks Rob, bizarrely I checked a few days ago and they were showing both nights plus tax. Just looked again and the second night has been reduced to 0.01, they must be watching!

  • Dev says:

O/T, there is a 40% transfer bonus to Avios from US Amex MR cards. Normally try to hold points in MR, but this is a pretty good deal. Anyone heard more details about possible Avios devaluation? I recall Rob hinting about this over the summer.

    • Rob says:

No. It is business as usual at Avios Group but they have little control over what BA chooses to do over setting earn and burn rates. BA is an external customer and supplier as far as they are concerned.

  • Craig says:

OT – Has anyone flown BA2 from JFK to LCY? Would you recommend it over Club World in one of the usual JFK – LHR routes?

I’d be flying with my wife. BA2 looks great but my concern is that it might be too profesionally focussed for us. I wonder if the standard CW routes might be better for leisure travellers? Or am I over thinking?

Any views would be gratefully recieved!

    • Rob says:

You are over thinking! The 2×2 seating means it is particularly good for couples.

      • Stu N says:

Yes, it’s great – a really nice way to fly. I don’t see it lasting much longer so if you want to do it and the availability is there then I’d snap it up. It’s very odd getting on the relatively tiny A318 surrounded by the rest of the BA fleet at JFK.

I’d eat in the lounge though as it’s run as a sleeper service, we had a couple of drinks then crashed out.

Arrivals at City is a breeze, no queues and bags off in minutes.

    • Gavin says:

It’s a great service although I did read that a fair amount of the incoming flights get redirected away from City in the event of fog (especially in winter). Sure enough, we were redirected to LGW after circling for about 45 minutes which definitely spoiled the return experience!

  • Crafty says:

OT: For anyone struggling to use Nectar points, my Nectar app shows a deal to get 5 Caffe Nero hot drinks for 1,000 points. That works out at £1 per drink and is better than the already impressive permanent deal of 1 drink for 350 points. It’s only valid for the next 5 days (once you spend the points, you get drink vouchers value through Dec 2019).

    • @mkcol says:

Thanks for that as my hubby prefers Nero.

    • Imbruce says:

I always use my Nectar points to pay for our Xmas shopping

      • Scallder says:

Double up confirmed for November, capped at £200 of vouchers (so £100 of Nectar points). No caps on categories anymore it would appear, so you could spend £200 on electrical products if you wanted to,. Also 11 categories rather than the usual 7(?).
