IHG Rewards Club, the loyalty scheme covering InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza etc, has launched its new Spring promotion.

It is fundamentally another version of the long-running Accelerate offer, although this time it is called “Reward Nights. Faster.”

You can find out your targets, and register, on the IHG website here.

It is valid for stays between 15th January and 30th April.  The closing date for registration is 15th March – this is the first time I can remember that IHG has closed registrations early.

Once I had registered, I got the following targets:

10,000 bonus points for staying five nights

19,200 bonus points for staying at three different IHG brands

5,600 bonus points for 2 x 2-night weekend stays (Saturday plus another night)

8,000 bonus points for four stays booked on the corporate rate of the company I haven’t worked for since 2011, and which has special rates at very few properties anyway ….

3,000 bonus points for one stay in February

42,800 bonus points for completing four of the five targets above

This is fairly useless to me, frankly.  It is virtually impossible to hit the weekends target and I can’t see any scenario under which I could hit the ‘corporate rate’ target.

The 19,200 points bonus for staying at three different brands is an interesting one, however.  If I value an IHG point at 0.4p then I’m getting almost £80 of points back from those three stays – plus my standard points and the 3,000 points for a February stay – which is a good deal.

Realistically, I might be able to achieve 32,200 bonus points.  This would involve staying five nights over the next four months, taking in three different brands and ensuring one stay is in February.

My wife got the following targets:

10,000 bonus points for staying five nights

28,800 bonus points for staying at three different IHG brands

8,400 bonus points for two Holiday Inn stays

10,800 bonus points for 3 x 2-night weekend stays (Saturday plus another night)

6,600 bonus points for booking two ‘Bonus Point Packages’ (this is when the reservation system offers you additional points on your stay in return for paying a slightly higher rate)

This is VERY interesting:

she could earn 35,400 bonus points from just three nights, as long as each was at a different brand and two were ‘Bonus Point Packages’

she could earn 58,000 bonus points (worth £232 based on my 0.4p valuation) from just five nights, as long as they included two Holiday Inn nights, three different brands in total and two of the bookings were for ‘Bonus Point Packages’

Conclusion

The new IHG Rewards Club promotion is, at least in my house, surprisingly generous.

We don’t know what Marriott Rewards will do when MegaBonus ends on 31st January (MegaBonus details are here).  However, IHG’s ‘Rewards Nights. Faster.’ offer is looking a lot more generous for us (your position may be different) than Hilton’s new ‘2,000 bonus points per stay’ offer which I wrote about here.

I strongly recommend signing up now, especially as IHG is closing registrations early on 15th March, even though stays until 30th April count.  Remember that only stays from 15th January count – existing bookings are OK and do not need to be rebooked.

You can register for the new IHG promotion here.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the T&Cs don’t mention having to book nights after registration. I booked a couple of January stays back in December and would really like those to count.

    • Sandy says:

In general it does, but you may have to call them up to claim for it.

    • Rob says:

You’re fine. Historically, this is only an issue if you have ‘book via the IHG app’ targets. With those, you MUST book during the promo period. For all other stays you can book whenever you want.

  • James B says:

Pleased with mine this time after a rubbish list last time. I got 63,200 total
    14,000 for 7 nights
    33,600 for 4 brands
    8,400 for 2 weekends
    7,200 for 3 bonus packages

    • Michael Jennings says:

      I’ve got

      14,000 – Stay 7 night(s)
      7,200 – Stay 3 weekend(s)
      2,800 – Stay at 5 IHG® Hotels
      6,600 – 2 Bonus Points Package stays
      30,600 – Complete 4 of the 4 offers

I get 61,200 if I complete all the offers, which is pretty good, but I need to do three weekends and then some. Can I do a weekend with the Friday and Saturday in two different hotels? This would make is slightly easier.

I think I am probably not going to go for this one.

  • Phil C says:

a good headline figure but as I only stay at Holiday Inn and HI Express for work for the odd night during the week in the UK and keep an eye on the costs there is absolutely no chance of hitting 5 brands, weekend stays or bonus points!!! looks like a max on 18,600 points for me on this one!

  • Sandy says:

I am amazed how different the offers are. I supposed having been a Spire Elite for many years, they just set my bar much higher!
    22,000 11 night(s)
    22,400 4 brands
    7,200 3 Holiday Inn® hotel(s)
    8,800 Stay 4 weekend(s)
    6,600 3 Bonus Points Package stay(s)

  • Graeme Taylor says:

A very easy 96k for me if I make 3 stays at 3 distinct brands (and hence hotels), one of at least 4 days and two with bonus points packages. Or I can swap that 4 day for the awkward 2 weekend 2 day stays you have. Either way, this would likely be viable even as a pure mattress run and should be easy with genuine stays.

However, what I briefly found more interesting was a mini status challenge of 2 nights for gold… Except I already am, having accidentally hit the spend target in 2018 (and the benefits are negligible anyway).

    • Adam says:

I got “Stay 1 night(s) and enjoy the upgrades of Gold Elite status for 2019” I actually had to go to My Account area just to check I was still Gold Elite!

      • Alan says:

Presumably it’s just a poorly worded way of meaning ‘make use of your status by staying with us’??

  • Saira says:

Mine are quite varied, though as my travel plans are usually last minute I may hit a couple, but definitely not all. Not sure about the achievement bonus requiring 5/5 this time…!

13,500 Stay More, Earn More – Get closer to the rewards you want when you stay 9 night(s) and earn 13,500 bonus points.
11,200 Discover Our Brands – Stay at 2 brands and get 11,200 bonus points.
    11,200 Stay at InterContinental® Hotels – Stay at 2 InterContinental® hotel(s) and earn 11,200 bonus points.
6,600 Earn More, Faster – Earn 6,600 bonus points when you book 2 Bonus Points Package stay(s) and get to your next reward faster.
4,000 Stay a Little Longer – Earn 4,000 bonus points when you book 1 stay(s) of 4 or more consecutive nights.
23,250 Your Achievement Bonus – Complete 5 of the 5 offers and earn (an additional) 23,250 bonus points.

  • Mark E says:

Pretty good if I cherry pick the best bits of my offer.

I can get 28,200 by doing 3 stays if I use two different Holiday Inns and one other brand

I also have bonus points that I won’t manage for a corporate rate that I don’t have access to and for 4 weekend stays and a 4 nighter.

  • Bob says:

Hilton topic: has anybody here, who has HH status, ever received a physical membership card?

Initially I had gold through AMEX, and then became diamond, and have never received one. Just struck me as odd, as I’ve been sent cards by most loyalty schemes I’ve ever joined.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Yes every year. I think you need to request one in your account settings

      • Bob says:

Thanks, I’ll look through and find it. Is the card actually of any use? Can it be used as a room key for example, once checked in?

    • Rob says:

Back in the old days, yes. Can you order one online? Just tend to use Apple Wallet these days.

      • Bob says:

I was unable to find a way logged in; I’m going to email a request, and see how that goes.

        • Bob says:

“Allow up to ten weeks for delivery”

That’s 70 days. A Frenchman sailed around the world in under 43 days, and he was barely going over 30mph…

    • RussellH says:

I have not had a new Hilton Card since 2015, but I usually get two IHG cards per year, for some reason.

    • Dave Barron says:

I’ve requested a physical card and couple of times in the past and they’ve never arrived. Like Rob I simply have Apple Wallet version now.

    • Alan says:

Took ages to arrive when I had one in the past. Never bother with it now as they always have my details on file from booking online – failing that it’s in the Hilton app anyway.
