Watch Wimbledon with IHG Rewards Club.

The IHG Rewards Club auction platform is pretty useless if you live in the UK.   Now and then, however, a good one slips through.

IHG Rewards Club is currently offering a pair of Centre Court Wimbledon tickets for Wednesday 3rd July.  This comes with full hospitality throughout the day in the Hertz suite.

For some reason it says ‘two Centre Court/No 1 court tickets’ – I’m not sure if they have seats for both and you can switch between courts as you wish.

The current bid is a puny 81,000 IHG Rewards Club points which (based on my 0.4p per point valuation) is £200-worth.  For comparison, the market rate for two Debenture Tickets for Centre Court for 3rd July is £3,250.

You can bid here.

Anyone else find the Virgin CC app to be complete junk? Set it to clear my full statement balance by DD and then it only clears half of it.

    • Peter K says:

It has it’s issues yes. Contact CS about the DD though as there was a whole ruckus about it quite recently.

      • Michael says:

I had to do it once before as I ended up being charged interest (only £7) but this team £350 has been left on my account i’m going to have to clear this morning….

    • Graham Walsh says:

Can’t even log into it. Tried it on iPhone and never worked, when I got my Android handset the other week, guess what, still won’t log in. See they spent a lot of time on testing it then.

  • Matt says:

Another OT: I’ve had another of my periodic thoughts about whether to change from Hotels.com to one of the hotel loyalty schemes. We generally just get Hotels.com gold by staying 30 nights a year, although that normally includes a few nights for other people. It does exclude a few nights booked through BA holidays, or where Hotels.com didn’t have the hotel we wanted. We normally aim for £100-£130/night (a bit more travelling west, a bit less going east). Our holidays vary, from beach holidays, through city breaks to 3 weeks in the far east as our next one to be booked.

I’ve had a look at the numbers, and it looks like Marriott might be slightly better for us, but at the cost of severely limiting our choice of hotels in most places. Hilton is probably slightly worse, but with the same drawback.

    I think I’ll stick with H.com – am I missing something?

    • Michael says:

Probably not. If it seems to work for you in the way describe then it’s likely not broken so don’t change it.

    • Peter K says:

Don’t underestimate how frustrating it is to not be able to find a hotel of the type you want in the place you want, especially for holiday breaks rather than work nights. That’s my main gripe with the various hotel schemes.

      • Matt says:

That’s the big drawback – almost none of our travel is for business, so we don’t seem to fit particularly well for the hotel chains.

        Thanks

      • Russ says:

Very true. Also an airport hotel on the airport is more preferable than your nearest hotel chain property 5 miles away by taxi at 3am.

    • Paul Stevens says:

I’ve used hotels.com for years. I mainly travel for pleasure and for me having the option to book almost any hotel outweighs any benefit you might get from having hotel status and having to religiously stick to a chain. Also, every couple of months you get a night free!

  • Anna says:

OT – did our first F yesterday which was very nice indeed except for the IFE which was poor! The screen quality was akin to a pirate DVD and the choice of films extremely limited and not what was advertised as available on the BA website. It didn’t detract hugely from our enjoyment but I was very surprised at the difference from the rest of the F experience. Has anyone else found this?

    • Stu N says:

There are some 747s with old IFE (referred to as Mid-J). The First cabin and seats are the same across the 747 fleet so you’ve not missed out there but the IFE on this sub-fleet has a very poor reputation. I think you were rather unlucky to get one to JFK as they tend to fly less lucrative routes. Hope you had a wonderful flight otherwise, it is a lovely way to travel.

    • Mark says:

I’m guessing you were on an old 747 that hasn’t;t had the panasonic upgrade to the IFE? we just flew to vegas return and there was a chance we might get the old IFE, luckily we got the new IFE. I think its just a risk, especially if flying the old 747s.

  • TGLoyalty says:

The change has already happened today. Yesterday was the last day to book under old points amounts.

  • Jack says:

OT re Lloyds vouchers – does anyone know if the availability for redeeming these vouchers is now based on standard BA avios availability or do I have to call up each time to check potential dates/routes? Thanks for any recent experience 😁

    • Anna says:

They always used to say it was the same availability whether BA or avios.com though I have my doubts! But if there’s availability on the BA site, you will be able to use your upgrade voucher.

      • Jack says:

Thanks Anna I’m sure you are always the one who comes to my rescue, much appreciated.

      • BJ says:

I’m sure longhaul was the same but domestic connections could be different.

    • fivebobbill says:

A lot of the time you will find better availability on Avios.com than BA.com, so search there first before calling them.

      • Lady London says:

British Airways told me on at least two different occasions this was not the case, when I had both screens open whilst talking to them and it was clear avios.com had better availability. (and it was bookable).

    • CDB says:

It should be the same although annoyingly they refused to book Ljubljana for me on Lloyds voucher because it was a new route and they hadn’t updated their systems.

      • meta says:

I would complain as T&C of the voucher are clear – any route where there is availability. Maybe complain to Lloyds as well. It is a totally lame response.

  • James says:

OT. I currently have a free BA Amex Card and I would like to upgrade to the BAPP card.
Can I apply online for an upgrade or can it only be done over the phone (I would like to carry over the spend to the BAPP card)?

    • Graham Walsh says:

You can do it online and put in your existing card number as an Amex holder already when it prompts you

      • Jonny says:

I would do it over the phone – last time I did it online it resulted in a credit pull on my file and it was a palaver to get it removed

  • Dan says:

OT if I have both a dragonpass and a prioritypass, can I use them at the same time to bring 2 guests for free?

    • Shoestring says:

DP guest will be chargeable (there are some small exceptions to this but your card issuer will have told you, most guests are chargeable). £16 – £19.50 depending on when you got your DP. Plus it uses up one of yours.

So you’d be better off just charging your 3rd member to PP ie Plat. Was £15 but I think it already went up to £20.

PP guest #1 is free, though. £20 to get 3 of you in, bargain. That’s assuming they let you 3 all in, you might want to reserve admission in advance.

      • Shoestring says:

however – ISTR that with my 6 free DPs from Barclays, I could use as many of the 6 to get me & the family in as I wanted. So I distinctly remember using 4 DPs in one go about 3-4 years ago. No1 T3.

Does this mean you could let a guest use a DP without using one yourself? Hmm

  • Zara says:

OT: I have just upgraded my gold charge card to platinum for the 20k bonus. Can I self refer for green card for 12k points, then cancel the platinum and upgrade green to platinum for another 20k. Or is that too cheeky/greedy and not doable? TIA

    • BS says:

Theoretically yes. But Amex have a history of cancelling accounts that take the piss. What pushes you over the line? Only they know that.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Can you. Yes

Should you? Its up to you and how you think your relationship with AMEX would be affected

Personally they deserve something for those 20k points and upgrading closing then upgrading against in quick succession could raise eyebrows at AMEX, they are free to chose their customers.

      • Zara says:

Thanks both. I’m in need of accumulating some points quickly. But I have had the gold card for 2 years and previously held the platinum card for a full year so hope they will be slightly more lenient on me for having paid some fees in the past!
I’ll have a think and work out what’s best- definitely don’t want to keep the platinum given the fee and having a 5 month old baby and a 2 year old has limited our travel in recent months to really justify having it – just about manage to get packed and to the airport in time so never get to use the lounges and already have Hilton diamond from elsewhere.
