Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Amex Platinum is letting you order a metal card immediately – and a quick benefits reminder

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

The new American Express Platinum fee and benefits package kicked in yesterday.  You are now looking at a £575 annual fee, with the carrot of a £10 monthly Addison Lee credit and a metal card.

When we originally wrote about the launch of a metal card, I joked that American Express would be facing a large number of claims from existing holders of The Platinum Card who had ‘lost’ or ‘damaged’ their old plastic one.

As it happens, this isn’t necessary 🙂

New American Express Platinum card

If you log in to your American Express account, click on Account Management and then Order A Replacement Card.

Select Replace Metal Card and a new card will be sent out to you ASAP.

Don’t forget to register for onefinestay

There is one other thing to note.

The Addison Lee benefit of £10 credit per month is automatic.  Remember to use code RIDE8 on your first trip, which gives you an £8 saving as long as you spend over £15.

However, the 2nd new offer – $200 cashback on every onefinestay home rental you book – requires registration.

The registration link is on the same page as registration for all of the hotel and car rental status upgrades.  You need to log in and go Benefits & Help (top menu) and then Platinum Benefits.

Scroll down to where it offers onefinestay enrollment.

Does the replacement metal card come with a new card number or is it the same as the existing one?

  • Tony says:

Received my metal card today. Not sure what all the fuss is about!

  • Joe C says:

Metal card arrived today – offers saved on the old card have transferred over to the new one, so that’s handy

  • Tom H says:

Does anyone know whether it is possible to have a damaged card replaced with a plastic one rather than the new metal one? (Not actually keen on carrying around metal cards. They’re a bit heavy and slips out of my rather old wallet with its loose pockets)

    • Rob says:

They do. I lost my Curve last week!

    • BlueHorizonuk says:

Would assume so as there is a separate option for Metal on the card replacement page.

  • ashic says:

Metal card just arrived. Portal already had the new card number (though the old one was still working). Activated. All MR points and offers still show up.

The metal card does look quite good. Slightly darker hue than expected. Front metal, back plastic. The number and valid through months are is slightly raised and on the back, so not painted on. My name and the 4 digit code is on the front. I wonder why they bothered changing the age old AMEX layout and put the card number on the back.

Here’s to hoping they metal the BAPP cards….

    • timtams says:

Putting the card number on the back is so the card can be “flexed”. Basically shown off on social media.

  • Matt says:

Initially surprised at the weight and the darker hue. Just wondering if the card is left out in the sun a bit, it will darken and look like an Amex Centurion……..

Plastic backing doesn’t look long-lasting. Do other metal cards, like Curve, have plastic backing?

  • Fred says:

Has anyone else’s new metal card got some slight discolouration dots on the magnetic stripe – do you think this will stop it from swiping properly?

Don’t really have anywhere I swipe but if I needed to I’d like to know it worked!

  • Adam says:

I have the business platinum and it doesn’t give me the option of a metal card, just he usual lost, stolen or damaged options….

    Wonder why that is?

    • Rob says:

Everything comes to he who waits ….

    • Dave says:

Check again today! Just ordered mine!

      • Rob says:

Have you checked your new annual fee too? And your new benefits package?

        • J says:

Usual Amex mess up. £595 shown at the top of the page and £450 in the T&C’s at the bottom.

        • Dave says:

Won’t let me get that far!

‘We’re sorry. We are momentarily experiencing technical difficulties’
